Any electrician knows that Lego bricks are genderless, not 'heteronormative', because each can 'mate' with any other. Perhaps Science Museum staff should study to be electricians and actually make themselves useful.

Any parent can currently withdraw their child from school if they're unhappy. Labour's Schools Bill ends that right for many, giving local authorities a veto. That's why all parents should protest against this state power grab.

The 52nd session of the Commission on the Status of Women began meeting at the United
Nations Headquarters in New York yesterday and will be in session until the seventh of March.

A coalition of over 150 International Non-Governmental Organisations who represent the
Civil Society Groups on advocating for stronger gender reform architecture (GEA) will be in
session. Mostly these groups are known on Indymedia and the IMC's because they
have not stopped bringing the issue of Measurable Reform in the area of gender
equality to the table. and Ban Ki-moon agrees.

This an extract of a letter from The National Union of Dismissed and Unemployed Workers of Iran To the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) regarding workers being flogged for participating in May 1st actions in Iran. Full text at the link.

Dear Friends,

As you are aware the police and security forces assaulted last year’s peaceful May 1st rally in the city of Sanandaj, battered workers, and arrested 13 of them. Among them were Mr. Shays Amaani and Mr. Seddigh Karimi, President and Executive Committee member of our union, respectively. They were released on a $50,000 bail each after 42 days in detention. The court sentenced them to two-and-a-half years’ imprisonment. We appealed, but the Court of Appeal has not yet given its verdict. ... read full story / add a comment

Jim Moody interviews Ahmed Hussain who has defected from the SWP to the Conservative Party.

JM: Why have you left Respect (Independent) group on Tower Hamlets council?

AH: Initially the four of us left the party because of the leadership: it was not going anywhere. It was just out of order, because everyone was doing what they wanted to do. The reason I left the new group is because we were trying, but we were not going anywhere to help the community.

The other thing is, the party itself is just not going anywhere because the electoral commission has put an embargo on the name. You can’t really re-establish the party all over again. It was quite hard to do with Respect. People had elected me to the council to serve them, and that was not happening because I was concentrating more on party problems. That was why I thought I should move on to another party. ... read full story / add a comment

Yet again the US Occupation Forces have launched an attack on The Iraq Freedom Congress.

In another poor move; the occupying troops has made another attempt to eliminate the voice of freedom from Iraq by raiding the IFC headquarter in Baghdad on 12 February when they forced themselves in, verbally and physically assaulted the guards and stood them out in the rain for several hours. It is understood from the many previous incidents that these attempts are not to look for weapons or investigations regarding terrorist activities; but in fact they are to intimidate and eliminate any voice that objects the occupation and its puppets.

James Turley writes on how in Respect Chris Bambery claimed that Secularism ‘justifies’ islamophobia. Yet now Socialist Worker demands separation of church and state.

Bambery writes on islamophobia in media and establishment reactions to the speech. The Sun’s “bash the bishop” campaign and David Blunkett’s reference to something “external to this country” is a breath away from “there ain’t no black in the union jack”. The article implies that the pro-islam stance of the SWP has hardened since the break with Galloway. He writes that in spite of talk of muslim ‘backwardness’, many of the foundations of science were commonplace in islamic culture by the middle ages. True -science would not be doing well without the concept of zero. But it buys into the logic of the ‘clash of civilisations’. The idea of religions competing in some cosmic dog-show for the prize of ‘most progressive’ is ridiculous in itself without Bambery on the judges’ panel. ... read full story / add a comment

Catherine Nevin’s appeal against her conviction for murder began in the Court of Appeal yesterday. Ms Nevin was convicted in 2000 of the murder of her husband Tom at their pub, Jack White's Inn, Brittas Bay, on March 19, 1996. The appeal will be based on evidence that prosecutors failed to disclose at her original trial that witnesses , William McClean and former provos Gerry Heapes and John Jones ,were long-standing police informers . Nevin’s lawyer ,Anne Fitzgibbon , is seeking access to classified documents including security files which indicate that Mr McClean was a suspect in the Dublin/Monaghan bombings of 1974.
