This story began (for some) on the 30th of Sept. 2005 when a Danish newspaper published a series of cartoons depicting Muhummad PBUH the prophet of Islam. For others this story began on the 14th of February 1989 when Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini then supreme leader of Iran issued a "fatwa" calling for the execution of Salman Rushdie on Tehran radio. & for yet others more, this story began with the Quran and that no visual images or depictions of God exist because such artistic depictions may lead to idolatry and are thus disdained. A similar position in Christian theology is termed iconoclasm. Moreover, most Muslims believe that God is incorporeal, making any two- or three- dimensional depictions impossible. This prohibition is extended to the prophets of God. (peace be upon them). ... read full story / add a comment

the 1st of April has been marked in Switzerland since 1891 as a national holiday and since 1994 as an official holiday to celebrate Swiss unity and the modern Swiss state. Every year a celebration is organised on the hill of Grütli, where legend has it, a defensive pact was made in 1291 amongst the representatives of 'Uri, Schwytz and Unterwald, three of the Swiss cantons who later led the formation of the modern state in 1848. for at least a dozen years, extreme right groups have attended the celebrations, and their presence prompted a "back-lash" from extreme left groups in 2005. ... read full story / add a comment

Every now and then the BBC news site produces little gems which either hint at a sparkling sardonic wit or a completely inept team of hacks who don't get out of the newsroom enough. Today's "europe feature" looks at how Ireland and Dublin have celebrated the arrival of Eastern Europeans, bending over backwards to offer them hospitality (the céad mile fáilte) well paid jobs, equality, and a venue for their garage bands to play. ... read full story / add a comment

Bush junior, the wicked and foolish, puppet of an even older generation of imperialists and cold war warriors, will be remembered as the most unpopular US president both for Americans and those who live under US hegemony in the wider world. His is the name which history will credit with the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan and the non-existent WMD. His is the name which history will attach to the response to the Tsunami, and the natural disasters of 2005 ; the awful yet predicted consequences of Climate Change, "the extreme storms". In his 2006 "state of the Union" address, Bush Junior, the Supreme Wookie, 43rd president of the USA deals with such themes as :- Leadership, "No Surrender", Troop Levels, "Never Falter", Compassion, Vigilance at Home, Strong Economy, Baby Boomers, Oil Addiction, Human Resources, Hopeful Society, Cloning Ban and the subjunctive "god bless america" thing. It is important and of Irish interest for several reasons, which can be summarised thusly- the USA is an important trade partner of the EU and Ireland. We do a lot of business with them. Most of the citizens of the USA speak a dialect of English which we can readily misunderstand. __________________________________________________________________________________ the full and unexpurgated text :- ... read full story / add a comment |
