Full on trucker revolt going on in Spain is leading to mini-riots, looting, chaos. There are plenty of other revolts of a similar kind going on around the world right now and I suppose you could easily add in the Irish Fishermen. Forced cuts in Fuel use / fuel price hikes are the equivalent of steep wage cuts. But not much sympathy. PPL think. oh those nasty truckers and fishermen - they're causing global warming. Between a rock and a hard place. Anyone got on the ground reports from Spain? This stuff exaggerated? ... read full story / add a comment

James Turley, CPGB, writes on how the warmongers have stepped up their threats towards Iran. He says only principled opposition to both US/UK/Israeli Imperialism and to the Iranian Regime will win over mass support to the anti war movement. Full text at link.

Communists unequivocally oppose any imperialist action against Iran. It is clear to all that the invasion of Iraq has been a catastrophe for the Iraqi people, no matter what US and British propaganda says. It is also clear that this catastrophe has real roots in the objective dynamics of recent capitalist development and the relative decline of US global hegemony in the face competition from China and Europe - and so any subsequent adventure in Iran is likely to have similar results.

Following on from the affiliation by the PCS, the ASLEF union has now voted to affiliate to Hands Off the People of Iran. Nobody spoke against the motion to affiliate. Full article at link.

The national conference of Aslef, the rail drivers’ union, has voted unanimously to affiliate to the Hands Off the People of Iran campaign. This is the second major union to do so, following the decision of last month’s PCS conference, where only Socialist Workers Party comrades opposed affiliation. However, the SWP had no presence at the Aslef conference and nobody spoke against the proposal. Delegates from across the country spoke in favour, including general secretary Keith Norman. ... read full story / add a comment

Like their counterparts in France, Ruairi Quinn and the Irish Labour Party have become disturbingly fixated on dark skinned schoolgirls wearing hijabs. Derangement, paranoia and liberal racism are now centrist political positions. Quinn's Islamophobic and racist tirade against those immigrants who don't "conform to Irish norms" (we could have fun trying to define that one) is covered in today's Irish Independent:

Before Ruhollah Khomeini came to power, he portrayed himself and the proposed islamic regime as defenders of the poor: “This system of clerical rule is necessary to prevent injustice, corruption, oppression by the powerful over the poor and weak, and deviation from islam and sharia law; and also to destroy anti-islamic influence and conspiracies by non-muslim foreign powers.” Once in power and in a position to deal with Iran’s economy, Khomeini’s infamous response to demands for a better life spoke volumes about his real position: “People did not make revolution for bread. They made revolution for islam ... economy is for the donkeys” .He later expressed impatience with those who complained that the standard of living had dropped after the revolution: “I cannot believe that the purpose of all these sacrifices was to have less expensive food.” ... read full story / add a comment
