Below are two extracts from George Monbiot's "Comment" in today's Guardian. Full story available on link. ... The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) reports that Israeli aircraft crossed the line "on an almost daily basis" between 2001 and 2003, and "persistently" until 2006. These incursions "caused great concern to the civilian population, particularly low-altitude flights that break the sound barrier over populated areas". On some occasions, Hizbullah tried to shoot them down with anti-aircraft guns... ... read full story / add a comment

This was the front page of Scotland’s Sunday Herald on 30th July 2006. The Irish Government propaganda machine would have the Scottish population believe that no US military flights are allowed through Irish airports. “Dermot Ahern, the Irish foreign affairs minister, said he would block any attempt by the US to transport arms to Israel through his county.” Most interesting is the total absence of any reference to the fact that Ireland allows US military flights through Shannon airport and the recent court victory of the Pitstop Ploughshares. ... read full story / add a comment

Not in My Name Nour Odeh, The Electronic Intifada, 30 July 2006 " ,,, The Israeli side has attempted to market this campaign of death and destruction in Lebanon and Palestine as "self-defense" intended to "defend peace," in the words of Shimon Peres, who in 1996 gave the orders to bomb a UNIFIL post in Qana, South Lebanon, where hundreds of civilians had sought refuge. That attack burned 106 Lebanese civilians to death, also in the name of Israeli "self-defense." Israeli officials have also allowed themselves the audacity of speaking on behalf of the Lebanese and Palestinian peoples they are assaulting. ... read full story / add a comment

In Counterpunch, Aug 4th 2006, Jonathan Cook reports on Human Rights Watch's analysis of civilian casualties inflicted by Hizbullah and the IDF and concludes that indiscriminate media reporting is perpetuating at least two inaccuracies: that IDF strikes are "targetted" with Lebanese civilian deaths being a result of Hizbullah using them as human shields; and that Hizbullah attacks are deliberately targetting civilians. ... read full story / add a comment

The major communication mediums of the world continue to bombard the public with images and descriptions of the Israeli-Lebanon conflict. The media works tirelessly to deliver our social consciousness. Today’s mass media maintains its status as the principal means of creating and sustaining social realities. The internet-based ‘independents’ lack real independent front-line resources and continue to rely on the mainstream for most of their information (much to their chagrin). ... read full story / add a comment |
