Save The Children is a global practising non governmental organisation based in the USA. It works to safeguard the rights of the child globally. Challenges which are very different from the tsunami zone of SE Asia, to Mozambique, to Darfur, to Brazil, children face different threats from desiese, war, natural disaster etc., Save the Children estimates that 14.5% of children in North America and Europe almost of all of whom can read and write and have got their vaccines and many of whom are guaranteed minimum levels of nutrition have arranged to meet a stranger through the internet. Often the stranger is not another kid, its an adult even if not a bogeyman michael jackson type, it could just be a sci tech war recruiter in a gamesroom. Scary stuff. ... read full story / add a comment

By OLIVIA McGILL TEGUCIGALPA — Indigenous people are probably the most marginalized in Honduran society. Many communities live under constant fear of losing the land they live on, despite obligations under national and international law, the government has failed to provide them with deeds to protect their right to live on and use the land. Disputes with landowners, multinational logging companies and tourist enterprises over the recognition of land rights have led to abuses against indigenous leaders, including violence, intimidation, death threats and assassinations. The authorities have consistently failed to properly investigate such abuses or to offer adequate protection against them. full article: http://www.marrder.com/htw/special/environment/114.htm ... read full story / add a comment

Bill Gates, the world's richest man, is now betting against the dollar. "I'm short the dollar," says Gates. "The ol' dollar, it's gonna go down." Will the dollar be one day the target of attacks by hedge funds? Recently the dollar rallied a bit, but short-term fluctuations aside, the dollar has nowhere to go but down. Gradually or suddenly and precipitously? It may be possible to engineer gradual devaluation of the dollar and stimulate US export, shrinking the US trade deficit, but it turns out that "the US does not have adequate manufacturing capacity to eliminate the external deficit," according to David Hale. That means that the US power elite will demand that the US working class reduce consumption to haul the multinational ruling class out of the abyss of the US current-account deficit, at the same time as forcing the US working class to make greater and greater sacrifices as IED fodders, sinking further into the quagmire in Iraq. Can American workers fight back? ... read full story / add a comment

The statement below has been produced for distribution at the World Social Forum, Brazil highlighting a campaign organised by Joe Higgins TD, Socialismo Revolucionario (CWI - Brazil) and the CWI against the recent threat to evict Kaiowa Indians from Cerro Marangatu. When Joe Higgins arrived in Brazil to visit this landless community, he immediately contacted the Irish Foreign Minister and he protested to the Brazilian embassy in Dublin. This pressure along with letters of protest to many Brazilian embassies internationally has obviously had an effect on the Lula administration. Representatives of the local authorities in Mato Grosso do Sul informed Joe that government officials in Brazilia have contacted them demanding information on the case. ... read full story / add a comment

Sky , over the time the 'Irishheads' (who would later establish the IMC here) got to know him in Genoa for the Anti G8 protests, became our new best friend. I can remember it like it was yesterday sitting at the cafe beside the Genoa IMC being ranted at by Sky about why ireland needed an Indymedia Site yesterday. I remember him going around in his raver necklace in the Centre on the Sunday of the protests chilling others out even though he knew big trouble was coming our way. He ended up in a coma in Hospital and We never saw him in the flesh again. The Daily mail slandered and scapegoated him in the worst way possible and this Guardian Article (Cut and pasted as site requires registration) tells the whole story in a fair way. Fuck the man from the Daily Mail and good on Sky for Harrasing them and standing up for his rights. ... read full story / add a comment
