offsite link Covid Bias at the BMJ Thu Mar 13, 2025 17:00 | Dr Carl Heneghan and Dr Tom Jefferson
Once a bastion of an evidence-based approach, the BMJ became biased towards lockdown and lost its way, say Carl Heneghan and Tom Jefferson. History will judge that the lack of debate in its pages was a serious error.

Back in March 2020 Toby was among a depressingly select group of journalists who opposed the lockdowns. The other side included his now Spectator Editor Michael Gove, who has let him write about it in this week's magazine.

Keir Starmer abolished NHS England today as he launched an assault on the "flabby, unfocused and over-cautious" state. But Ministers played down the prospect of wide-scale job cuts, casting doubt on the savings.

One of the world's best known investigative reporters, Seymour Hersch, is revealing in the next issue of The New Yorker magazine that Bush & co are actively planning a major air attack on Iran and that; one of the military’s initial option plans, as presented to the White House by the Pentagon this winter, calls for the use of a bunker-buster tactical nuclear weapon, such as the B61-11, against underground nuclear sites. One target is Iran’s main centrifuge plant, at Natanz, nearly two hundred miles south of Tehran.

A sad day for Irish journalism, and also very bad news for the many talented and dedicated staff who worked there.

This article is from the Sunday Times Ireland Edition, and I haven't seen or heard this news anywhere else. Even the CPI's own website doesn't have it. Therefore it's possible that this is nonsense. However the CPI has been under attack since its launch, so I wouldn't be surprised if they have finally decided to give in to the enormous pressure they have been under. ... read full story / add a comment

Hello from Guatemala. I am forwarding the article written by Sandra, she contacted me recently during my stay in Guatemala. If any of you took part of the presentation of the book "Fumigation: the human and environmental costs of chemical warfare in Colombia" last October in Trinity the following article will make sense.
I have seen the mentioned plantations in San Marcos and i believe that the the propossal fumigations here is going to finish with the farmers livelihoods and other plantations. I have been following close the case of the Mining company and there is a great video for anybody in Ireland interested to watch about the consultation propossed by the Indigenous people about the mining.

I thought this article in the Sunday Times was worth a look.

It seems that Christy Loftus, Shell's new hired help in Mayo, is saying that they are going to have to find a new pipeline route. He's getting €58K pper year for stating the obvious there, but he also seems to believe that there actually is a route they can find where the community will accept the danger posed by an experimental high pressure raw-gas pipeline. It looks as though Shell are also paying him to learn Irish, so some good will come of this scheme...

Further on in the article, Maura Harrington wonders about the possibility of someone giving birth at the Rossport Solidarity Camp. ... read full story / add a comment

Tomorrow, the high-profile inquest into the death of Tom Hurndall, the 22 year old British student shot in the head as he shepherded Palestinian children to safety, opens.
Beneath the gaze of the world's media, his mother , Jocelyn, will tell coroner Andrew Reid, at St Pancras Coroners' Court, London, how the Israeli authorities tampered with evidence, suppressed investigations and attempted to cover up the shooting.
