The Chinese government is suspected of being behind the recent “denial of service attacks” on the Marxist Internet Archive website . Brian Basgen who has worked on the site since 1990, says that ,since January , there have been hundreds of attacks ,99 percent of which emanate from China . As a consequence , the MIA may be forced to sacrifice its Chinese language material to keep the rest of the archive open . Although the attacks have only targeted Chinese files , security experts say that Chinese machines can be exploited by people outside the country, making the attacks appear to come from China . ... read full story / add a comment

Jonathan Cook in an Electronic Intifada article addresses the phenomena of a book 19 weeks on Israel's bestseller list that challenges Israel's biggest taboo. The book: When and How Was the Jewish People Invented? written by Shlomo Sand, an"expert on European history at Tel Aviv University" controversially argues that: the Jews were never exiled from the Holy Land, that most of today's Jews have no historical connection to the land called Israel and that the only political solution to the country's conflict with the Palestinians is to abolish the Jewish state .... ... read full story / add a comment

"Here’s a summary of what preservationists have tried to do to save Ireland’s Hill of Tara from highway construction. Their new argument suggests that the downturn in the country’s economy requires Ireland to save its historic resources as tourist destinations."

This is an really interesting article written by Richard Moore for the Southeast Voice in Wexford. In it he asks what Ireland should do in these present times where it is clear huge changes are afoot in the global economy. I would highly recommend people to read the original in full for its insight.

Richard Moore has been writing about global issues for a number of years and has been attempting to truly understand how system works. A few years ago he wrote a book called: Escaping The Matrix and a host of other articles. In more recent times, he has begun to focus on grassroots organising and how to reform communities and democracy from the ground up. ... read full story / add a comment

Some Shell to Sea groups remain, but as anyone who uses Facebook will tell you, having a profile page is where the action is. Shell to Sea had a popular one, with lots of "friends" and activity on the page. It was very useful in spreading information about the campaign, especially outside Ireland.

So Mary Coughlan goes on the radio to talk about Facebook and how its arrival in Ireland sends a strong signal. At the same moment, the Shell to Sea page is removed. Coincidence? ... read full story / add a comment

As the banking sector celebrates the government bailout the mainstream media have sought to capitalise on their readers formerly dormant anti-capitalist sentiment, with those journalists and editors that still retain an inkling of their activist youth revealing in the opportunity to indulge in some populist rhetoric, MediaBite takes a look at the media's performance over the boom years and asks whether the media, not just the bankers and developers, should be held to account for their part in bringing on this economic crisis. ... read full story / add a comment
