In recent years climate change has loomed large in the public imagination. Scientifically, there is little doubt that it is a real threat to the future of human civilisation. The greenhouse effect has been known about since the early 19th century - gases in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour trap heat from the sun, causing the climate of the planet to heat up over time. Probably the most spectacular known example of this effect in action is on Venus. As recently as the 1960s it was thought that Venus might have a climate that could support life. However, in 1962, a US space probe measured its surface temperature at 425°C. Billions of years ago, it had a climate similar to that of earth today – but a runaway greenhouse effect turned it into a ball of fire. ... read full story / add a comment

With the coup d’état in Honduras, the spectre of the military dictatorship appeared again in Latin America. Hands off People Of Iran sends solidarity greetings to protestors in Iran on 9th July. This day is the 10th anniversary of 18 Tir – when the Iranian state, under President Khatami violently put down a protest by students. The protest was initially against the suppression of a popular newspaper. Students were attacked in their university dormitories , as they were ransacked and set on fire by state forces. The reaction to the attack was overwhelming, with mass demonstrations taking place. The students became very radicalised and openly opposed the regime. Ayatollah Ali Khameneh’I ordered the movement to be crushed and President Khatami approved this decision. ... read full story / add a comment

Electricians go on strike in response to a two year employer strike on pay. Since 2007 (roaring property boom) employers have been witholding pay that is legally due to electricians. They are now looking for a 10 per cent pay cut. Employers and unions came to an agreement, the employers broke the agreement, they now refuse to negotiate and are looking for a collective 10 per cent pay cut.

A boat full of humanitarian supplies to the Gaza Strip was seized in international waters by the Israeli army in recent days, with 21 crew (two Irish included) being detained by Israeli authorities. Yet another blatant breach of international law, our Government and others in the West have turned a blind eye. Israeli robbery of Palestinian land through settlement continues, along with their "security" wall, boxing in the West Bank while simultaneously taking large chunks out of it. They have recently stopped letting schoolbooks in to the Gaza Strip, adding to the long list of basic items unavailable to it's long suffering population. It is time for us in the West to wake up to the suffering of our friends in Palestine, and to stand up to the bully that is Israel. It is morally reprehensible to continue to watch such horror take place any longer. ... read full story / add a comment

Despite the brutality of Iran’s Islamic regime, protests continued in Tehran and many other cities two weeks after the upsurge began. They are on a much smaller scale than the first days, but it is extremely significant and inspiring that many youth and other people are determined to persist even in the face of gunfire, beatings, arrest and possibly torture. They are expressions of a broader popular rage that will not be easily quenched. ... read full story / add a comment

Europeans were mostly responsible for the museum industry as much as the grand symphonic orchestras, opera and zoos. They used these things at first not out of any wish to educate nor illuminate in the laudable manner of contemporary interpretative centres but to solve three important 19th century bourgois problems.

1) how to gainfully employ people who really smellt bad but are now represented as Indiano Jones.
2) how to reclaim supposedly civilised history from the church of Rome.
3) how to offer vandals like Lord Elgin bequest options and subsequent relief from death taxes. ... read full story / add a comment

About 1 in every 35 Gardai working in the state are on Shell duty, just like these

A written reply to a Dáil question by Aengus Ó Snodaigh by justice minister Dermot Ahern shows that Garda personnel strength in a large majority of Irish counties is less than the number of Gardai deployed in Erris to protect Shell's interests. For example, Shell has more cops than Co. Clare, Co. Kerry, or Co Sligo. Shell also has more cops defending its corrupt Corrib Gas Project than there are Gardai 'defending' the citizens of Galway, Waterford or Dún Laoghaire. ... read full story / add a comment
