In the wake of Irish Minister for Agriculture, Food & the Marine, Simon Coveney's upcoming decision on whether or not to grant the state agency for fishing and aquaculture in Ireland, Bord Iascaigh Mhara, licenses for fish farms in Galway Bay, Slow Food International has reaffirmed its position on intensive fish farms. Slow Food does not consider open net pen fish farms an environmentally sound practice, Piero Sardo, President of the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity, confirms. "Open net pen aquaculture is not a solution to the problem of overfishing: It damages natural ecosystems on a local and a global level, including wild stocks, habitats and water quality. Feeding carnivorous salmon in farms means other wild species must also be harvested, resulting in a larger carbon footprint - since the fish feed must be fished, processed and transported". read full story / add a comment

Medium Geoff Keating is fighting to get his horses returned to him after Urlingford Pound entered private property in North Dublin and removed 15 horses. Spots looks malnourished after 6 days in the pound. Is this down to stress? Lack of food? Mistreatment? Or all of the above? You can see Spots is tied up and the rope is taut. At a time when the Government is advancing the ridiculous proposition that the Irish State is "regaining its economic sovereignty" by leaving the Eurozone bailout, sensible people will be more concerned at the possibility of a Cypriot-style "bail-in" for the Irish banks, entailing confiscation of customer deposits over €100,000, as the euro-currency crisis continues and the planned EU "banking union" makes provision for such steps. The continuing Eurozone crisis was discussed at the EPAM conference in Athens, Greece, last weekend week. At this event representatives of organisations from different EU countries agreed on the vital need for the Eurozone States to re-establish their national currencies and work towards the dissolution of the Eurozone, which is destroying the democracy of the peoples and States that use the euro and wreaking economic destruction and social misery on country after country. Below for your information is a copy of the joint press statement that was issued after this conference on behalf of the participant organisations. The revised wind guidelines published today by the Minister for Environment do not address most of the key issues concerning windfarms and fail to provide any detail on the single issue of noise and flicker they do address The document is described as a ‘work in progress’, with the details of noise yet to be settled. These ‘details’ include special locations, the impact of cumulative noise, the noise prediction methods to be used, the inspection and monitoring regime on foot of complaints under EU regulations and any remedial actions. Public workshops on accessing your rights under the Aarhus Convention have recently been held in Cork and Galway, and tomorrow there will be a final public workshop in Dublin, in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Golden Lane, from 10 to 4. The workshop will help ordinary citizens to understand their rights and to access information on the environment. The format will involve inputs from environmental lawyers and activists with expertise in this area. The three pillars of the Convention - information, participation and justice - will be discussed as well as a detailed case study. This is just one of the hundreds of studies indicating that ingesting fluoride is deleterious to human health. Unnecessary and health-robbing fluoride chemicals are added to public water supplies because it satisfies the political will of powerful special interest groups.
