Family Carers are under additional stress to meet the increasing care needs in the home, whilst maintaining their own health and other family commitments due to the challenges presented by resource constraints. The most recent cuts in Budget 2013 to the Household Benefits Package, Respite Care Grant & increase in prescription charges amount to over €13.00 per week for Family Carers. Caring for Carers Ireland supports the Government in implementing these Four National Goals of The Carers Strategy for Family Carers. It has emerged that the HSE is about to take steps to further reduce maternity care choices for women in Ireland. New Guidelines to be introduced by the HSE, will spell the end of midwifery led care in Ireland because the HSE has not put in place the infrastructure to support the changes. read full story / add a comment

Abstract: There is an overwhelming failure to recognize human rights in birth in Ireland. In December 2011 the Fine Gael and Labour Government passed legislation, called The Nurses and Midwives Act, 2011, which governs the way midwives are insured to attend homebirth in Ireland. Midwives who make an individual assessment, that the mother and baby are safer birthing at home than in a hospital setting, desite falling outside generalized guidelines, are punishable by law with a €60,000 fine and/or a 10 year prision sentence. Women who make an informed decision, against the uninformed terms, are threatened with having their midwife barred from attending them in childbirth and having their baby taken into State custody at birth. read full story / add a comment
