Gardaí in Waterford city are investigating a fire at a mobile phone mast at a well-known GAA ground. The fire, which is being treated as arson, destroyed the Meteor Mast at Ballygunner. It is the second time in five months that the mast has been destroyed by arsonists. The siting of the mast at the pitch is currently the subject of an appeal to An Bord Pleanála. http://www.rte.ie/news/2006/1107/waterford.html Telecommuncation masts have been sawed, pulled down blocked and set on fire. Large groups residents have blocked workers from getting on sites to install masts.For the last nine months residents have prevented Vilicom - telecommunications consultants for the Office of Public Works - from erecting the mast at Shankill. 40 Kurdish asylum seekers are being threatened by the Cypriot government to be deported back to Syria- where they face imprisonment, torture and persecution by the authorities.

Two proposed amendments to the Irish Constitution were announced by Barnardos at a press conference on Monday 6th November 2006. In an apparent gesture of official support for the measure, Finance Minister Brian Cowen headlined the presentation.
