Foreigners in Angola left high and dry as passports are detained. The situation is the result of restructuring the passport office in Luanda. This all comes at a time of inceasing unease in Angola's political climate. There have been reports of passports having been detained for up to two months now and still no sign of them being returned. Hundreds of foreigners, wishing to return to Europe and other destinations have had to cancel flights as a result of the confusion. read full story / add a comment

A recent medialens alert highlighted the cartoon nature of a news report/one-sided smear on Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez.
John Pilger described it as “one of the worst, most distorted pieces of journalism I have ever seen” - in which, Channel 4’s Washington Correspondent Jonathan Rugman smeared Chavez in "a piece seemingly written by the US State Department".

In the global controversy over corporate control of agricultural seeds, crops and food, an emergency community meeting was held Tuesday night at the tiny village of Summerhill, Co. Meath. The village is next door to the site of a proposed five year experiment with 450,000 patented genetically modified (GMO) potatoes. The local community is worried that farmers who become contaminated by the patented potatoes may lose ownership of their crops . They are also worried about the scientific evidence of health and environmental risks, the impact on property values, and a threatened boycott of Irish potatoes if the experiment goes ahead. read full story / add a comment

Across the Twin Cities, thousands of students are planning to walkout tomorrow, April 28th, against the war in Iraq and against military recruitment in schools. This will likely be the largest youth antiwar demonstration in Minnesota since the Vietnam era.
But in recent days reports of repression and disruption tactics from school authorities has gone way up. Under police pressure, a big peace concert scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, as part of the walkout events at Minneapolis Technical and Community College (MCTC), is being shut down.
Below are two urgent appeals from students at two local schools (Central and Jefferson) were threats against students came to a head yesterday. Please read these, act on their request for solidarity, and forward this appeal for help on to others.
Students from these schools are holding a press conference this afternoon at MCTC's "Free Speech Plaza" at 3:30 PM. Please come and show your support!

Staff not paid because of bank error

SEVENTY workers at the National Aquatic Centre weren't paid their wages because of a bank error.

Money due to be paid to the employees by the operators of the centre, Dublin Waterworld Ltd, failed to appear in their accounts yesterday. Angry workers contacted management who told them the problem would be sorted immediately.

AIB Bank has said that the missed payments were due to a "technical error".

The wages were due to be paid into the workers' accounts last night.
