Easing of planning regulations governing the building of one-off houses in the countryside were essential if stability in the rural population was to be maintained or regained. This was stated by Independent Sligo/Leitrim TD Marian Harkin, when she welcomed reports that new guidelines from the Department of the Environment would ease current restrictions on house building in the countryside. She said that there was an appalling lack of accurate information concerning the numbers of one-off houses or of their environmental implications. read full story / add a comment

A pregnant Pakistani woman and her brother-in-law have become the latest targets of a hate campaign by racists in south Belfast.

The pair had just retired for bed last night when a six-foot wooden plank was thrown through the front window of their house in the Donegall Road.

Both occupants were badly shaken by the incident, the latest in a spate of racist attacks in loyalist areas of south Belfast.

Last month, a Chinese and a Ugandan family fled their homes in the Village district when they came under attack on the same night. read full story / add a comment
