The ongoing coup attempt in Bolivia continues, and yesterday 8 peasants were killed when they were ambushed by fascist gangs of the oligarchy. In the working class area of Plan 3000 in Santa Cruz, the people repelled the fascist gangs which had attempted to enter this area to spread fear.

As a result of these provocations Evo Morales has expelled the US ambassador.

Obama has lost in ten of the last 12 opinion polls for the United States presidential election, 2008. His margin has between a 6point loss in the first week of September and a 4point loss in the last three days. Those who know how the USA voting public works blame this losing streak on Palin. It certainly seems to make sense as of the 57 US nationwide polls carried out thus far Mc Cain has only won 12.

Jonathan Freedland in today's "Guardian" represents well the disbelief of European journalists & to a great extent intellectuals that the voters of the USA, those enfranchised alone to make a decision which affects us all seem about to deride our faith & hope of the change Obama promised.

I on the other hand believe that the opinion poll data only confirms how little Europeans as well as US Democrats understood one of the most important socio-historical shifts in US citizens' perception of their own institutions & government. I argue that they've finally realised the importance of their vice-president. read full story / add a comment

Speculation is mounting as to why the Asgard II, Ireland's only sailing training Brigantine, sank in French waters this morning and why a salvage pump could not have been used to prevent her loss. She was travelling in the shallow waters of the French Bay of Biscay with 5 crew and 20 trainee sailors who paid between 500€ for youngsters to 600€ to take part in the trip. This fare covered their passage, vitals & in line with statutory requirements full training for ship abandonment which proved useful when skipper Colm Newport ordered her evacuation.

She had been due for maintenance in France on September 21 after taking part in this week's commemorative boat show for the 1798 French landing in Mayo. read full story / add a comment

At the elaborately staged 60th anniversary celebration of the establishment of the North Korean Stalinist State, the "Dear Leader", Kim Jong IL was conspicious by his absence.
It is believed that he may have suffered a stroke (Kim is alleged to enjoy cigars, booze and teenage girls while his devoted subjects make do eating grass). At the edge of 66, Kim, like 72 year old John McCain, is no spring chicken and the demise of his personal brand of socialism is sure to end relatively soon if the rumours of his ill-health are unfounded.

How ironic that the Irish Greyhound Derby final falls at the end of Gambling Awareness week,( this week).

How many Irish people realise that very young school-going children are freely allowed to bet their pocket money without any legislative protection at Ireland’s Greyhound tracks.

Yes, Irelands TOTE BETTING has no under age limit, leaving kids as young as 4 or 5 years old reaching over the counter at places like Shelbourne Park Greyhound Track to gamble their pocket money away.
