In the upcoming Seanad general election Sinn Féin will instruct its Councillors and TDs to vote for Fianna Fáil candidates in many of the panels (constituencies). I wonder whats happening with the worlds oil supplies. Some people say we've reached the peak other say in 30 years we will reach it. When peak oil has been reached then we start extracting the stuff thats more difficult to extract. I came across this short documentary about the Alberta oil sands in Canada. Very interesting.... http://www.vbs.tv/player.php?bctid=987199110&bccl=dW5kZ...uZWQ= read full story / add a comment

For those not familiar with the acronym ‘KISS’, it expands to, “Keep It Simple Stupid”! The KISS (K) principle was/is the most invaluable teaching/training aid in the IT industry, especially in the early days when people actually feared the ‘complexity’ of computers. Anyone who is confronted by an overwhelming amount of ‘information’ tends to lose themselves in a sea of confusion. Fortunately, a very bright and creative mind developed the ‘K’ principle for dealing with these situations. read full story / add a comment

People today seem perplexed as civilisation as we know it plummets into the abyss. Yet, in the broad sense, the future is entirely predicable. The much lauded system of economic rationalism has resulted in huge disparities in wealth comparable to ancient societies; the wealth of Pharaoh-God-Kings of the past was staggering and in stark contrast to the wealth of their subjects. The peoples’ living standards were maintained at ‘adequate‘ levels to ensure a fit work/slave force for their rulers – remind you of anything, are you able to draw any comparisons today? In fact ancient Egypt (utilising modern poverty statistics) would have fared better in the social sense than most of today’s societies. So much for economic rationalism and laissez-faire capitalism! The inequity of today’s economic reality is far from mysterious; however, one mystery remains, the masses of today tolerate far greater inequities than the masses of yesterday. read full story / add a comment

Today a few things happened - Iraq, London, Poverty etc.., But for some reason US TV network MSNBC wanted to lead their news hour with a Paris Hilton story. You know the vapid girl who went to jail (not prison) and suffered attention deficit disorder, read the bible but couldn't remember her favourite passage.... Watch this video as Mika Brzezinsk refused on air to lead with the story saying she wanted Iraq first and then tried to burn her script. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VdNcCcweL0 read full story / add a comment

“Every woman deserves to have her mother in the delivery room with her” I remember reading these words on rollercoaster.ie years ago from a young scared Irish woman due with her first baby. Her heartfelt plea for help…her desperation for ANY suggestion ….of ANY possible way that she could persuade her maternity hospital to make the exception to the rule and allow her mother and husband in with her for the labour and birth. Likewise I remember the replies of other women…women who have gone through it before…women who dripped with cynicism because they too would have liked this choice but knew what her outcome would be. The pain, confusion and fear of that sad, sad post have stayed with me over the years. Unfortunately it looks like very little has changed for women in some areas of Ireland . While many maternity units around the country are receptive of additional birthing partners and Doulas, the Dublin hospitals remain unresponsive. AIMS Ireland has decided to look deeper into this issue. read full story / add a comment

Many articles have been written on the tactic of pervasive and continuous debt as a form of economic social management. However, few financial ‘wizards’ and politicians understood the ramifications of such a tactic. To meet regular needs average people have been forced to borrow at rates never before seen. As a result of the created necessity to borrow large amounts and the ease of obtaining large loans, a rapid increase in loan defaults is occurring. Perhaps statistical information on the ‘spike’ in long term debt servicing and mortgagee defaults highlights the failure of the debt strategy. Hailed at the time as the optimum method of economic and social management, today it is proving to be just another strategy of big business appropriating more at the expense of EVERYTHING and everyone else. read full story / add a comment

Josh Wolf is a minor cause celebre in the USA. As a freelance-journalist/blogger/indymedista he had taken video of a lot of demonstrations. One particular demonstration saw the police subpoena a video tape from him in order to attempt to prosecute someone in a black bloc that allegedly assaulted a police officer.
