Here is an extract of An interview with Mariam of RAWA. The Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA) is a women's organization that runs underground schools and other projects, educates Afghan girls, runs a periodic journal, and agitates politically for women's rights, human rights, secularism, and social justice in Afghanistan. Full text at link. From the beginning, RAWA announced that the US and the West have their own reasons for being here and it is not for the freedom of the Afghan people. We said that what the US/NATO is doing under the name of democracy is in fact a mockery of democracy. It is clear for us. Today NATO bombings are increasing, more civilians are being killed, and other violations are being done by the US and NATO. And now even they are trying to share power with the Taliban and terrorist party of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. read full story / add a comment

My wife was pregnant with twins this time last year and it got me thinking about Avril Monaghan, the woman who died, pregnant with twins, in the Omagh bombing. This is a short piece that I wrote at the time, remembering that tragic day in general, and those hugely unfortunate twins in particular. I'm sharing it here to commerorate these people on the tenth anniversary of their deaths. read full story / add a comment

Many areas have to be tackled in our efforts to end Greyhound racing in
Ireland. However none more vital than stopping the annual sports capital
grants from the Irish government. These have amounted to 105,000,000 euro
since 2001.As we are in a recession now surely Hospitals or the elderly
would be more deserving causes. Contacting and appealing to Bord na gCon to stop the slaughter and suffering of Greyhounds that is inherent in racing is like asking the butcher to become vegan, maybe harder. read full story / add a comment
