The story of the Spanish Civil War (1936 – 1939) is one of the most emotional tragedies of 20th Century history. From all over the world, democrats, socialists, anarchists, communists, republicans and progressive liberals volunteered to defend the Democratic Republic of Spain from an attempted coup d’état by the Fascist General Francisco Franco and his allies in Hitler’s Germany and Mussolini’s Italy. While the major western powers stood back and allowed democracy and freedom in Spain to be overrun and crushed by a fascist dictatorship, many brave men and women gave their lives to honour the democratic will of the Spanish people.

Choice Ireland has undertaken this month of action to raise local awareness about the operation of the clinic in the area and to generate support for our upcoming Oireachtas hearing where we will argue that legislation should be introduced to shut down rogue agencies. Iñaki de Juana Chaos who is due to be released this Summer has informed both the Basque political prisoner network and the authorities of his prison that he is on hunger strike again.

He has offered as reason the concerted media campaign of vilification launched against him in the last days as it was revealed that upon leaving prison and completing his prison sentences he will take up residence in a flat owned by his wife, who he married whilst in prison, on the same street as several victims of ETA.
