( Note ; with Danish journalist Erik Pedersen I went to Michael’s house in Glasnevin a few months ago to conduct an interview about volunteers of the International Brigades for Danish radio. Despite his advanced years, a sprightly man brimming with wit and stories spoke to us for several hours. Characteristically he didn’t talk much about himself or his own endevours in Spain ( he is reported to have been a brave and fearless machine gunner in the battlefield, according to other sources ), instead concentrating on the politics of the situation and on remembering those who fell. History walks with us, and listening to Mr O Riordan reminisce about the heroic struggle waged against the fascist threat in the 1930’s reveals how many of the issues confronted then remain urgent today.
Parts of the interview are unclear, and the brackets are mine, Ramor ) read full story / add a comment

Following this, activists including Ed Horgan wrote to the Limerick Leader in reply and were published.

WRCV, Venezuela, 18 May 2006
Venezuela has not been out of the news in the last few years. While most of the world’s media is accusing the Chavez regime of being only one step away from a ‘communist’ dictatorship the real picture of Venezuelan reality is very different. The Chavez government has embarked on a massive programme of social change and wealth redistribution. Venezuela, a country of enormous national wealth, has historically known a very unequal wealth distribution. Under the dominion of multinationals and imperialism Venezuelan wealth found its way to the rich elite in many countries but never trickled down to improve the living and working conditions of the masses and the working class in Venezuela itself. read full story / add a comment

AFTER-WORK ANTI-WAR SOLIDARITY VIGIL, ST PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL, 6.30pm

Solidarity vigils will be held outside the cathedral at 12.30pm and 6.30pm daily. Please ensure that you attend at least one of these events. The 12.30 vigil is especially important.

Anti-war activists have decided to offer tangible support to the Afghan hunger strikers by continuing to organise the 6.30pm vigil. Residents Against Racism, and others, are putting enormous work into organising solidarity during the day and it is only right that the anti-war movement mobilises in support of their efforts. We must offer more than mere words.

At a meeting held in the wake of Tuesday's vigil, anti-war activists agreed to continue with the 6.30pm vigil. These will be held each evening between 6.30pm and 7.30pm, and it is very important that everybody makes a genuine effort to be there. If you are free during the day, go to the vigil at 12.30pm; if you are working, turn up at 6.30pm. But do something!

Please bring placards (preferably home-made and colourful!) and your solidarity to tonight's vigil. And spread the word!

The Illusion of Balance

Ah that wistful sense of balance so uncommon in the liberal media. In response to a letter sent to the Irish Times criticising Charles Krauthammer's mis-quotation, among other things, of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's remarks at the "World without Zionism" conference held in Tehran, the Irish Times printed a 'counter balance' of sizeable proportion. read full story / add a comment
