The WHO once aimed to help nations stand on their own two feet, but now it mainly pushes the agendas of the rich and powerful, says Dr David Bell. That's why it cares more about experimental vaccines than basic sanitation.

The French protest vote, directed against pro-European parties, appears to be as much a protest against parliamentary democracy or what is left of it after decades of it being undermined by the forces of globalisation, than a protest against the corrupted political class. All parliamentary democratic systems are essentially the same, depending on how votes are cast. Only if meaningful choices are offered to voters, will a sufficient level of consensus emerge. But nationalism is not the only alternative to globalisation, and fascism not the only alternative to parliamentary democracy. There are alternatives, democratic ones at that. The anti-globalisation movement is moving beyond the stage of protesting to creating possible solutions. read full story / add a comment

The turnout was low, at 71.60%. The main revolutionary left candidates, Arlette Laguiller and Olivier Besancenot, got over 10% between them, but this stunning success has been overshadowed by the even larger vote for the far right. Jean-Marie Le Pen of the Front National and Bruno Mégret of the MNR (a split from the FN) got almost as many votes between them as Chirac. read full story / add a comment

Corporate America and corporate boardrooms across the globe wield enormous political influence. It may in fact be argued that in today's material world corporate interests are the primary motivating factors for political action. In the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that power, for a multitude of reasons, has been unjustly mobilized to help sustain 35 years of an illegal Israeli military and economic domination of the Palestinian people. read full story / add a comment
