The History Society UCC hosts a meeting on “History of the new left in Iran, 1960 – 2010”. It will be at Boole 3, Main UCC Campus, College Road at 7.30pm on 28th January. The talk will be given by Yassamine Mather, leading Hands off the People of Iran member and Iranian political activist. Yassamine was herself involved in the 1979 revolution in Iran and remains deeply involved in the Iranian left. Given the ongoing struggles and growing self confidence of the working class movement in Iran, this meeting comes at an important time and hopefully it will help to build the solidarity movement here. read full story / add a comment
international / rights, freedoms and repression / news report Monday January 04, 2010 08:36 by RSF
Ireland is just like all countries fighting for a socialist government where revolutionary organisations have to take on the state as well as outside interference and occupation. The same struggle is being waged by socialist revolutionaries in countries such as Cuba, Palestine, Venezuela, Iraq, the Basque Country and of course Turkey (to name but a few) as is being waged in Ireland. We here today share a common bond, a struggle against imperialism. James Connolly wrote that “an injury to one is an injury to all” so we must show solidarity with each other and stand together. Isolation [as the conference is so aptly named] is a powerful tool of the oppressor. We must not let the oppressor have that tool. We must wrest it back from him and use it to become stronger. Isolation can led to despair and we all know where despair leads to. This we cannot let happen. read full story / add a comment

Shamus Cooke writes on whats happening in Iran and compares the genuine struggle for real change in Iran to Obamas agenda for intervention. The full article is at the link.

In Iran, mass protests were drowned in blood by government authorities; at least ten reportedly have been killed with hundreds injured. The events have been given ample coverage in the U.S. media, with the intention of further demonizing Iran’s repressive government. Absent in the American media are the deeper implications of the protests, which, to anyone paying close attention, constitute a powerful revolutionary movement. This movement has grown exponentially in a very short period of time. Although only beginning in June over allegations of voter fraud, the movement is now endorsed by millions of combative Iranians, demanding “death to the dictator,” while they waive an Iranian flag that’s missing the Muslim insignia. Massive demonstrations in the streets and university campuses have directly confronted police repression and in some cases have overcome it. read full story / add a comment

These comments are from a number of Comrades mainly from a CWI and IMT background. But we think they will find an echo with Comrades from many other left backgrounds. We have concluded that the internal life of just about every left group is unhealthy, overly centralized, too top down, even we would go so far as saying to some extent undemocratic. We believe that the internal lives of these groups draw from the period when the Bolshevik party was degenerating and being taken over by Stalinism and along with that became negatively influenced by many decades when they were isolated from the mass workers movement. The recent crisis in the IMT is a reflection of these false methods of organizing which are common to just about all revolutionary left groups. We try to discuss this here. We look forward to hearing from Comrades. See our Learning From the Past link and our blog address. John Throne. read full story / add a comment

(CAIRO) Gaza Freedom Marchers yesterday, 1st January 2010, approved a declaration aimed at accelerating the global campaign for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israeli Apartheid.

Roughly 1400 activists from 43 countries converged in Cairo on their way to Gaza to join with Palestinians marching to break Israel's illegal siege. They were prevented from entering Gaza by the Egyptian authorities.

As a result, the Freedom Marchers remained in Cairo. They staged a series of nonviolent actions aimed at pressuring the international community to end the siege as one step in the larger struggle to secure justice for Palestinians throughout historic Palestine.

The following declaration arose from those actions: read full story / add a comment

The republican network for unity (R.N.U.) would like to thank all the people and organisations who supported our aims, objectives and campaigns throughout the year of 2009. We move into this new decade as a young, vibrant, determined and highly organised republican socialist alternative with support growing for our position of putting the working class first throughout the 32 counties and beyond. As an organisation the network supports the concept and practice of real community empowerment free from all selfish political interests. The struggle for a 32 county socialist republic lies at the heart of the networks ethos and work. read full story / add a comment
