Why it is hard to share the wealth

The rich are getting richer while the poor remain poor. If you doubt it, ponder these numbers from the US, a country widely considered meritocratic, where talent and hard work are thought to be enough to propel anyone through the ranks of the rich. In 1979, the top 1% of the US population earned, on average, 33.1 times as much as the lowest 20%. In 2000, this multiplier had grown to 88.5. If inequality is growing in the US, what does this mean for other countries? read full story / add a comment

Kofi Annan recently announced the UN is attempting to define “terrorism” in a universal sense; he hopes that a ‘new’ definition would apply both to States and groups. In view of the flagrant disregard for international law and convention by the US, one wonders whether this is a flight of fancy or a feeble attempt to regain some relevance for the UN. This new definition largely hinges on ‘civilian’ attacks. Analysts would view this as a purely ideological manoeuvre. The definition of “civilian” is no longer clear. read full story / add a comment

In Tramore, Co. Waterford there is a nice three mile long beach with sand dunes. This beach leads into a back strand with a lagoon like lake which is also a bird sanctuary. In the middle of this, on the back of the beach there is a dump.

This public landfill lets people leave their rubbish so that it can blown onto the beach and washed out to sea at high tide. Not only does it destroy an area of natural beauty and a wildlife sanctuary but it also devastates a tourist resorts biggest asset, the beach.

I plan to raise public awareness of this environmental catastrophe. The first stage of this plan will involve a Demonstration March through Tramore town and on to the dump. This will take place on Saturday March 26th @ 3pm.

If you are interested in supporting this project or would like more details email me on [email protected]

Thank You,

Just watched a very interesting video from 'Anarchists Against the Wall' an Israeli group that pulls down/breaks open the apatheid barrier being built with the help of CRH amongst others. It covers the events of 26 Dec 2003 when one of their memebrs was shot in both legs by the IDF but more interesting the media reaction that followed and why this first shooting of an Israeli from a Jewish background by the IDF provoked such a storm. Very interesting in light of the reaction here to plans to pull down the fence at Shannon earlier in the same year. read full story / add a comment
