A Chairde, The Independent Workers’ Union recently held a very successful Left Unity Table Quiz, which raised much needed funds for next year’s May Day parade. In light of this success, we would like to make it official that we will hold a second such quiz on Wednesday 3rd November in ‘An Spailpín Fánach at 9 PM. On this occasion, the quiz will be raising funds to contribute to the legal costs of activist and union member, Mary Kelly in fighting the ongoing charges against her for her resistance to the US military presence in Shannon. It is very important that the left-wing community in Cork continues to show its strong opposition to US troops in Shannon and that we support Mary in her on going struggle. In doing this, we also hope to continue on from the good work started last June in promoting left unity in Cork. read full story / add a comment

While we hear of Wikileaks and Julian Assange, lets not forget about Private First Class Bradley E. Manning who made it all possible. He is the one who is suffering the consequences. Here is his story as told by Denver Nicks. Full text at link. Midnight, May 22nd, 2010. Army intelligence analyst Private First Class Bradley E. Manning is sitting at a computer at Contingency Operating Station Hammer, east of Baghdad. He is online, chatting with Adrian Lamo, an ex-hacker and sometimes-journalist based in San Francisco. “Hypothetical question,” he asks Lamo. “If you had free reign over classified networks for long periods of time… say, 8-9 months… and you saw incredible things, awful things… things that belonged in the public domain, and not on some server stored in a dark room in Washington DC… what would you do?” read full story / add a comment
