national / worker & community struggles and protests / opinion/analysis Monday December 17, 2007 00:20 by Gregor Kerr
In early December classroom assistants in the North returned to work after a series of strike actions which had gone on since September. This action by the classroom assistants showed in stark form the two faces of the trade union movement. On the one hand there was the tremendous bravery and solidarity shown by the workers themselves in standing up to attempts to bully and harass them back to work. On the other hand was the duplicitousness and skulduggery of some trade union bureaucrats who not alone did their best to undermine the dispute but actively worked with management and politicians to betray the workers. read full story / add a comment

This issue contains a special report from the International Labour Organisation on Iranian violations of workers rights.

ILO ANNUAL SURVEY OF VIOLATIONS OF TRADE UNION RIGHTS: IRAN.

Protest activity: Despite the ban on strikes, workers protests and other work stoppages are a daily occurrence throughout Iranian enterprises. They are often repressed. Most of these protests concern either low wages, the non-payment of wages, lay-offs or factory closures. The minimum wage set by the government is $US 140 per month, while the official poverty line stands at $US 300. Nearly two million workers have not been paid - some for nearly two years. read full story / add a comment

"Argos announced profits in 2006 exceeding 8.1 billion euro whilst profits for the first half of this year are up 50%. Despite this Argos are refusing workers a 10 % pay rise, which would bring hourly rates to 9.90 euro. The cost of importing strike breakers is greater for Argos than the pay increase sought by the workers. However the prize for the company in winning this battle would be to break the power of the worker's union in Argos" read full story / add a comment

Last week, Stephen Sealey, the Brown Thomas Group Buying Director declared by email that his store s policy from February 2008 will be to stock no real fur products. Mr. Sealey confirmed that Brown Thomas will have a Fur Free policy; “from February 2008, Brown Thomas do not intend to stock any fur products. We work with a number of concession partners, and we have communicated this policy to them.” “to confirm we have told all concession partners they cannot sell rabbit fur, or other real fur in Brown Thomas and BT2”.
