Israel says the US has offered the country $10bn (£6.4bn) to bail it out of the worst economic crisis in its history. Israel's Finance Ministry said the package consisted of $1bn (£640m) in direct military aid and $9bn in loan guarantees. But, several hours after Israel announced the deal, the US said it had not made a decision about the aid package. Israel already receives $3bn a year from the US, mostly as military aid. read full story / add a comment

Jimmy Breslin reports that General Mike Jackson, commander of the British forces in the invasion of Iraq, was an officer of the Parachute Regiment and participated in the Bloody Sunday Massacre in Derry in 1972. Jackson comes out of Sandhurst, was in the intelligence services and was with the British Army torture centre in Belfast. Breslin concludes that Jackson is now doing what he does best: attacking defenseless people. Thus Ireland's role is made clear: a laboratory for imperialism. read full story / add a comment

This war is not about what the Americans and the British want. But what I think people are inclined to forget, EQUALLY, it is not about what anti-war protestors want. It is about what the Iraqi people want. If this war ends quickly with "limited" casualties and the brutal Saddam regime is toppled will this inadvertently have been the right thing to do? read full story / add a comment

Iraqi satellite TV, which can be received around the world, carried a news conference by Trade Minister Muhammad Mahdi Salih in which he invoked the deaths of British troops in the 1920s as a warning to the current attackers. "In 1920, the British Army was the most powerful army in the world. One hundred thousand soldiers of the British Army were killed then. Their tombs are in Baghdad and other Iraqi governorates. The Iraqis achieved this victory through the use of primitive weapons," Mr Salih said in Arabic. "They resisted the invaders and triumphed over them by using sticks and clubs. Using sticks and rifles, they triumphed over the British Army's will in 1920 when the latter used guns, aircraft, and tanks." read full story / add a comment
