The closer Australia gets to the Federal election, the fewer the political differences between the two major candidates! The chances of opposition leader, Kevin Rudd becoming the next Australian prime minister have increased dramatically following his private dinner engagement with king maker, Rupert Murdoch in New York today. During his quick visit to the U.S., Rudd also addressed the Brookings Institution in Washington and confirmed that any negligible differences between his policies and Howard’s would be completely eradicated by the time of the election and that he was ready, willing and able to assume the ’position’ of lackey, sycophant and new governor of America’s newest colonial acquisition, Australia! [O Ned, you’re better off dead!] read full story / add a comment

It is suggested that the Iranian invasion of Mexico in 2003, supported by an alliance of Arab nations including Syria and Lebanon, has now claimed over 2 ½ million lives. The justification for the invasion as we now know was false – Mexico possessed no weapons of mass destruction and posed no threat to Iran’s ally Venezuela. But three years on the Iranian military, supported by their allies, remain as occupiers within a country crumbling under the relentless violence. With one eye on the occupation and one eye on the surrounding region Iran has recently been caught in a bit of a diplomatic crisis – the recent detention of it’s forces by a hostile neighbour. read full story / add a comment

This article consists of notes for a guest lecture in NUI Maynooth on the anti-war movement in Ireland at its highpoint between September 2002 and March 2003. The focus is on the use of direct action in opposition to the use of Shannon airport for re-fuelling by the American military, and the different arguments within the anti-war movement in favour of, or against, the direct action tactic. read full story / add a comment

At the time of the murder of Rachel Kiely, Ian horgan was sixteen year old boy. He was originally convicted of rape and murder but eventually got imprisoned for manslaughter. A murder conviction would have carried a mandatory life sentence. Horgan was due to be released this year but the DPP applied to have the case appealed by the higher courts. The new sentence is a twelve year sentence for rape and man-slaughter (to run concurrently) which taking into account the four years already served means he should be out in a three-five year period. He's very young at twenty three is he not to be doing such heavy time? Is Ireland trying children as adults? read full story / add a comment

In Baghdad the Chaldean Catholic church of Sts. Peter and Paul received a blunt warning: "Get rid of the cross or we will burn your churches." Bishop Shlemnon Warduni told AsiaNews, "in the last 2 months many churches have been forced to remove their crosses from their domes," while in one case Islamic militants climbed the church roof to destroy the cross themselves. read full story / add a comment

travelled to the Kurdish area of Iraq to study and observe women’s activities there at close range for the first time in 2000. Then last summer I travelled to this region again to visit the non-governmental organisations of Iraq. When I arrived and came across the activities of Kurdish women, it was a very familiar environment for me, since I had done thorough research on Kurdish women in the recent decades, and also due to my familiarity with the NGO activities of Kurdish women in Turkey. In the Sulaymaniyah region of Iraqi Kurdistan I investigated eight women’s NGOs in detail. read full story / add a comment

In answer to growing animosity and the widely held view that the USA is a pariah among nations, compensatory responses from U.S. propagandists are becoming more frequent. The following media ‘staff report’ has been released to a number of international media outlets; India, Pakistan, Australia and Thailand to name the few. However, the ‘news’ release has received little coverage elsewhere, especially in locations familiar with U.S. double standards and hypocrisy. We refer to two Australian releases for our brief analysis. read full story / add a comment |
