Early February 2006 - Some 800 US troops have disembarked at the Dominican port of Barahona as part of the “New Horizons” military exercise that is to extend for several months. The U.S. troops will build medical clinics and conduct medical training, an official said. Some 100 troops were near the southern city of Barahona, close to the Haitian border, to work with the Dominican military on the projects, said Army spokesman Robert Appin. About 3,500 soldiers would join the effort, part of “New Horizons” — a Latin American aid program the U.S. military has run since 1998, Appin said. The work runs through May 22. Later, hundreds of demonstrators marched on the US Embassy in Santo Domingo as well as on the US military camp in Barahona, approximately 120 miles southwest of the capital. Demonstrators representing leftist, union and student groups presented a statement to a US Embassy official demanding the immediate withdrawal of the US troops. read full story / add a comment

Last December following a nonviolent break in at the NSA/CIA Pine Gap Sattelite Station (Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia), Sean O'Reilly was arrested during a follow solidarity vigil at the gates of Pine Gap. Sean was charged with "obstructing a federal police officer" merely for questioning the officers right to search his car. Sean went to court in Alice Springs on Monday, the pre-trial hearing of the remaining Pine Gap folks is set fo April with a jury trial later in the year. Pine Gap is used for electronic information gathering and targetting for the U.S. war machine. SEAN'S REPORT ON MONDAYS HEARING....... On Monday morning my hearing commenced. Charged with Obstructing a Commonwealth official. The prosecition led off with Officer Parker who provided a much exagerated account of the episode leading to my arrest. It made me wonder if we were talking about the same event. He had me jumping around in front of him, 6-8 inches from his face and blocking read full story / add a comment

We laugh when we see a dog chase its tail, yet are we so superior? Do we not seek what we already possess? The dog’s tail is not elsewhere or ‘external’, the dog thinks/believes its tail must be captured though it was never lost or disconnected. When people chase externals, Gods, religions, ideologies they seek that which they already possess (solace/identity/security/redemption/joy/harmony) yet it is the same canine ignorance that deludes people as deludes the poor dumb beast. To seek what one possesses is to lose it through the process of seeking – seeking is not possessing! read full story / add a comment

dublin / public consultation / irish social forum / news report Thursday March 02, 2006 20:07 by Barry Finnegan
Despite the goodwill towards the ISF, throughout 2005 there was a quite limited number of activists willing to put in all the work required to stage big one to three day type Social Forums. In light of this, activists involved with the working groups of the Irish Social Forum in 2003 and 2004 have proposed to focus on the local: the Dublin Social Forum, and to hold the event monthly and in the evenings. 30 people may come, or 150, we’ll see! [Dates of first one and next DSF meeting are below.] read full story / add a comment

Even after 40 years we can still be taken by surprise. No one anticipated the scenes in Dublin on Saturday afternoon. Even the Gardai, who turned up with riot shields, were wrong-footed by the ferocity and scale of the disturbances. Most of us expected a lacklustre imitation of an Orange parade trundling its way along O'Connell Street, followed by loyal sons piling onto buses to make their way home. No fuss. No impact. No point. read full story / add a comment

In the report linked to below, it describes how the acidity of the oceans has increased because the rate of carbon dixoide absorption has shot up. Many marine creatures such as corals and sea-shells of all kinds have carbonate shells which are sensitive to the acidity (or pH level) of the water and means they may start dissolving. This would have enormous repercussions for the entire oceanic ecosystems. read full story / add a comment
