As the Lebanon burns by blitzkrieg the lucky ones escape through the west of Ireland and those of us reading through lines wait for “Laser Guided Munitions” or “Smart Bombs” to travel through Shannon International Airport.

Today 26, July 2006 everything has an unreasonable hue a certain irrational shimmer. I can taste the air and it is bitter with unreason and cruelty. I am able to detect the world passing all the horror, lies and weeping. I must be dreaming or I could be mad! read full story / add a comment

In the Pitstop Ploughshares case at the Four Courts, the Judge's charging of the jury on Friday was difficult to hear. Three members of the public asked that the sound be turned up, - but without success.
On Monday the Judge went through the evidence of the defendants and the defence witnesses at break-neck speed and sent the jury out at ten past three to consider if they could reach a unanimous verdict.
This is a report on what followed in court on Monday and Tuesday.
Apologies for all errors and omissions. Apparent quotes do not mean to convey exact words. read full story / add a comment

Today those elected to the Peruvian government earlier this year to serve till 2011 must each swear an oath of allegiance. Its part of a series of constitutional rituals which will lead up to the presidential inauguration this coming Friday which is also Peru's national day.

The formula for the oath is very simple - (they often are) - each deputy takes his place in turn & recorded by stenographers and pictured on live TV recites the formula of loyalty. But already some deputies oaths have been rejected :- read full story / add a comment

NOBEL peace laureate Betty Williams displayed a flash of her feisty Irish spirit yesterday, lashing out at US President George W.Bush during a speech to hundreds of schoolchildren.

"I have a very hard time with this word 'non-violence', because I don't believe that I am non-violent," said Ms Williams, 64.

"Right now, I would love to kill George Bush." Her young audience at the Brisbane City Hall clapped and cheered.

"I don't know how I ever got a Nobel Peace Prize, because when I see children die the anger in me is just beyond belief. It's our duty as human beings, whatever age we are, to become the protectors of human life." read full story / add a comment

Most Irish newspapers carried an advertisement yesterday which included details
of the issues which will be studied in relation to the 'CC' case and the 'A' case.
These are published as perameters for the fifteen member committee which
contains three women, one TD(fine Gael) and two senators.
The'CC' case prompted an expected constitutional crisis, wherein the 1935
legislation pertaining to the 'honest mistake' mechanism was allowed in the case of
someone accused of statutory rape but of an age with the victim. Justice Mary Laffoy had no
option within the perameters of that legislation but to release 'CC'. read full story / add a comment

[BF, personal opinion: Check this out - USI, supposedly a "Union" to protect and advance student's rights as well as being an official affiliate of SIPTU charged with advancing trade union rights, when it's bosses weren't able to harass and bully this employee to their satisfaction, they suspended him without pay. If all the details of this case go public next month after the Rights Commissioner, it is going to have a devastating impact on those who still believe that the USI is a progressive social force in Ireland. To date The Examiner and Irish Indo have carried the story.] read full story / add a comment
