The occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan are not going according to the Whitehouse plan. A quagmire and defeat is increasingly looking to be the fate that faces imperialism. For the international working class and anti capitalist movement a victory for ther islamic fundamentalists in these countries would enormously complicate the world situation. In this statement from Labors Militant Voice we argue that the working class movement internationally should be linking with the workers movement in Iraq with the view to help is to take the leadership of the struggle to defeat the occupations and to build a new middle east free from imperialist domination and based instead on societies where the wealth is owned and utilised collectively and where decisions are made on the basis of the needs of the population and taken collectively and democratically. read full story / add a comment

While we all look at Iraq, which is largely about oil, we miss Big Oil's dodge of liabilities in the "anti-smoke" crusade in Ireland (etc) that, among other things, ignores many petroleum-based tobacco pesticide residues. It's one thing to smoke tobacco...it's another to smoke pesticide residues IN tobacco. read full story / add a comment

The corporation's announcement that non-collection would start today in Ringsend appears to have been a lie. Bin workers collected bins as usual and a great local protest approached them and, since they were collecting all the bins, we merely talked to them for 15 minutes to exchange information and let them go about their jobs. read full story / add a comment

The Greens and their allies remind me of another globally ambitious movement with committed cadres: Communists. And like the Reds in their day, the "Green-Grays" are inspired by visions of a better world. Schools throughout Ireland are preparing for a bet with the government to highlight that more can be done to reduce harmful emissions of greenhouse gases in Ireland. The schools will bet with the Department for the Environment that they can reduce their energy consumption (hence CO2 emissions) a rate faster than the government proposes for the country as a whole. An 8% reduction in eight months as opposed to the government’s target of 8% in eight years was set for the schools in this year’s environmental project ‘the Irish BET’. read full story / add a comment
