Socialist Forum
Title: Venezuela, Hugo Chávez and the "Bolivarian revolution"

Time and Date: 8.30 pm Monday 7, March.

Venue: Red Parrot Pub, Dorset Street, Dublin North City Centre.

Speaker: Kevin Wingfield

MANY people on the left and in the anti-capitalist movement have looked to Venezuela and Hugo Chávez in recent years for hope and inspiration.
Hugo Chávez, who has won two democratic elections on a radical programme, is hugely popular among Venezuela's poor.
In April 2002 sections of the army mounted a coup and arrested Chávez.
Immediately hundreds of thousands of poor people poured into the centre of the capital, Caracas, and caused key military commanders to switch sides reinstating Chávez after three days. In the aftermath Chavez made concessions to placate the opposition, and called for "national accord".

I find myself thinking of Kenya’s tsunami victim. That’s right: victim, singular, no “s” on the end. He was Samuel Njoroge, a car mechanic from Nairobi, who was making his first ever visit to the East African coast. “He was very excited about the prospects of going to the beach and learning how to swim,” said his father. He picked the wrong day. read full story / add a comment

Despite efforts by many around the world to rise above sectarianism in the face of the USA's raw imperialism, Walden Bello, a prominent critic of neo-liberalism, has launched an international distancing campaign against the Communist Party of the Philippines and the democratic sectoral movements which draw political inspiration from them. Claiming that the CPP's military wing has targeted him with a “hit list,” which in fact is a mere diagram showing the international linkages of various Phillipino parties and individuals, Bello is playing a dangerous game. Included on the diagram is Bello's Akbayan parlimentary party. read full story / add a comment

Vermont has a traditional of annual town assemblies that dates from the American revolution. Anti-war activists tabled motions against the Iraq war at these assemblies last night. 48 town meetings voted last night to condemn the war in Iraq and to call on political leaders to bring home the state's National Guard. We speak with an organizer with the Iraq Resolution Campaign that coordinated the town meetings. read full story / add a comment

With real miners and their wives as support actors, and with NUM officials picking up inaccuracies and inconsistencies in the film and story line as it went along, this film ought to be at least realistic and it is. Shot at Hatfield Colliery, where the head gear and pit stand frozen and intact, much as they did for the twelve months of the strike, the scenes are shot in the streets and communities based upon the fortunes of that mine, Stainforth, Dunscroft, Thorne and Moorends. Up to 240 of the local pit folk starred in the making of this film, and not simply as wannabies. Continues at read full story / add a comment

In what is being soundbyted as "a peaceful intifada" and a "cedar revolution" the complete government of the Lebanon last night handed in their papers, keys, and whispered to each other about not using big cars anymore.

the "very dramatic move" came after a days protest in "martyr's square". Most people don't want to be martyrs, they want to live peaceful lives and participate in their society, and also live free of the wickedness of war, corruption, lies, indoctrination, criminality of any politicians, the foolishness of the proud, any of the things they have long laboured under the yokes of. They do not want to live or their children to live in fear of intimidation, exile, poverty, inequality. They want normal lives.

When all your government resign you may safely consider you have taken an important step in the right direction. Anarcho-syndicalists approve of this type of thing. read full story / add a comment
