Any parent can currently withdraw their child from school if they're unhappy. Labour's Schools Bill ends that right for many, giving local authorities a veto. That's why all parents should protest this state power grab.

On This Day:

4 November. William of Orange, later king of Great Britain and Ireland, was born in 1650. An equestrian statue of him, blown up in 1929 by Republicans, remained on a scrapheap until World War II, by which time the Dublin waterpipes were in such a state that more water was escaping than getting through to people's taps. It was noticed that the genitalia of King William's horse were solid lead and weighed a stone and a half. The horse's member proved perfect for sealing pipes. read full story / add a comment

The International Federation of Journalists today condemned the Colombian government over a “political game of intimidation” after barring entry into the country of Víctor Báez Mosqueira, the General Secretary of ICFTU-ORIT, along with three other international trade union representatives.

“In a country where union activists are being killed as they fight for their rights, it is intolerable that international unionists expressing solidarity and support should be victims of a political game of intimidation,” said Aidan White, IFJ General Secretary. read full story / add a comment

Brussels 2 November 2004 (ICFTU Online): The international trade union movement today expressed its outrage at the expulsion of four international union representatives from Colombia on 30 October and 1 November, on the order of the government of President Alvaro Uribe Velez. It is understood that the Uribe government has drawn up a list of trade union representatives banned from entering the country, and that this list includes persons who took part in an international solidarity mission* to Colombia in September, to press the Uribe government to bring an end to the killing of Colombian trade trade unionists and the other means of anti-union repression which are rife in the country. Colombia has had a notorious record of violence and discrimination against trade unionists over many years, with more than 50 trade unionists murdered already this year. read full story / add a comment

Cearnóg na gCainteoirí/Speakers Square will be run on a first come first serve basis. Intending speakers will write their names on the back of chalk boards and when their turn arises to speak will write their issues on the front. Speakers will be encouraged to speak in any language, provided it's not foul language. Until a special dispensation is sought (if it really need be sought), the law of the land will apply as it does nationwide - In that it is an offence to incite hatred or slander anyone in public. The last time Dublin had a speaker's arena was on Elverys Corner (by the GPO) up until the 1950s. The city and the world may have changed since then, but there's been no change in the need for people to voice their views. Opinions are worse for being repressed and better when they are expressed. So Free your thoughts because small voices can make a big noise. read full story / add a comment
