‘The democratic process has failed for the people of Rossport’, said John Monaghan, who is directly involved in the dispute with Shell in Mayo. ‘They rolled out the black carpet for Shell, built a special road for them, while we’ve been looking at potholes.’ He said local government had rolled over completely for Shell, and the community has received no support either from Mayo County Council or from most of the local TDs.

Pope Benedict today professed regret at the Ferns Sexual abuse scandals and solidarity
with the victims. This might be the first papal utterance of understanding on the issue of child
sexual abuse which tormented a generation of Children. The message was relayed at
an Irish Episcopal Conference at the Vatican today.

Its a start.
It's an acknowledgement of the torment that people went through.
It is not an apology or acceptance of responsibility for the handling and
covering up of the issue.

Pope Benedict was at the head of the council which investigated the issue of Child Sexual Abuse.

Speaking during a visit to the area this morning, Mr Sargent said he blamed Mr Dempsey for the ongoing dispute due to his failure to intervene.

"This situation is unfortunately going to deteriorate and I put the onus on Minister Noel Dempsey to exercise his responsibilities to ensure a resolution of this matter and not just hide behind the legal small print which he seems to be relying on at the moment," he said.

Barry became world famous in the late 1990's as the animal rights prisoner on hunger strike against animal experiments, but this was just one side to his long career in animal activism. Barry was a committed vegan and took part in campaigns against all animal abuse; he was a hunt saboteur for many years; he was an ALF activist who personally rescued many animals from a terrible fate, he was convicted for an attempt to rescue one of the last dolphins to be kept in captivity in the UK.; He was also one of the movements most prolific economic saboteurs causing millions of pounds of damage to animal abusing companies and individuals; He worked and lived at various animal sanctuaries around the country; he did street stalls and produced newsletters and leaflets. In the end he made the ultimate sacrifice for the struggle to end animal cruelty. read full story / add a comment
