Cutting through all the prison/ Zoo’s PR spin , Peter points out that its primary concern lies in satisfying the prurience of these cash-cow visitors , and not in animal conservation . read full story / add a comment

The Danish evening paper, Ekstra Bladet, reports that foreign minister Per Stig Moeller has provided the parliament with written documentation to show that the prime minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, was aware of a UN report indicating that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction, eleven days before the government submitted a parliamentary bill to invade Iraq. Fogh has previously denied all knowledge of the report. This development may signal a rift in the Liberal-Conservative coalition and ultimately lead to a parliamentary majority to launch an investigation of Denmark's participation in the invasion. read full story / add a comment

Rory Hearne, People Before Profit Alliance Dublin South East, local resident and active campaigner with the Combined Residents Against the Incinerator speaking on the EPA decision said: "Local residents of Ringsend, Irishtown and Sandymount are once more devasated and dissapointed by a state body's decision in relation to the incinerator. I was one of the hundred or so local residents that attended the EPA's Oral Hearing and made statements to it outlining the impact on the health of the community if the incinerator was to ahead. However just as with An Bord Pleanala the EPA has ruled in favour of an anti-community, illogical and unsustainable monster incinerator. It is a PPP and therefore will be operated to maximise profits for the private company which will result in maximising waste production rather than minimsing and reclying waste. read full story / add a comment

Community Childcare provides high quality, affordable childcare, mainly in economically disadvantaged areas. However, with the change in the governments funding system, some projects are facing closure, working parents fees are increasing, and workers pay and conditions remain minimal. Workers, parents and providers will address meetings in Dublin and Cork to explain the impact this new "subvention" funding. In terms of public expenditure on early childhood services in OECD countries, Ireland comes in second last, at barley over 0.2%. (UK 0.6%, France 1.2%, Denmark 1.6%). read full story / add a comment
