In a press release on 19th August 2006, the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Noel Dempsey, announced the latest round of exploration licences for the Donegal, Slyne and Erris Basins. The future of Ireland's oil and gas resources is now being decided by the Irish Government in a process patently lacking in democratic legitmacy and accountability. These issues were debated at the “Exploring Atlantic Ireland 2006” conference sponsored by the Department and other interested parties. The conference discussed the so-called Irish Atlantic Margin Petroleum Province, the industry term for the Porcupine, Rockall, Slyne, Erris, and Donegal basins. The conference press statement stated that what it termed the “waters west of Ireland” contain several large sedimentary basins, broadly similar geologically to the basins of the Atlantic margins of Norway, the UK (the North Sea fields), and Canada (the Newfoundland fields). read full story / add a comment

An Australian corporate director who FAILED to perform was recently relieved of his position; he nevertheless was able to walk with a $30 million severance package. The workers Solidarity Movement held its Autumn 2006 National conference in Seomra Spraoi, a social centre in Dublin. The conference saw around two thirds of the membership attending with greetings sent from our comrades involved in the struggle in Rossport.
National Conference opens with questioning the reports given by various office holders, editorial committees etc. A summary of these reports follows - quite a lot of details and indeed areas involving relationships with other groups have been removed, as these were not written for public consumption. read full story / add a comment

Not too long ago Rupert Murdock would have trounced anyone in his media group for letting the ‘cat out of the bag’ (stating plain truth). It was therefore with jaw-dropping amazement that a local Australian audience listened to Murdock plainly state that we should not allow a particular administration to affect our attitude to the United States. “Administrations come and go”, he said, inferring REAL POWER, which Murdock represents, continues unaffected by the whims of democratic process! read full story / add a comment

A Cork –based Dairy farmer has admitted that animals are routinely beaten by farmers in an Irish Times article written by Agriculture Correspondent Sean Mac Connell on Tuesday last.10-11-06. This revelation of cruelty was made whilst referring to a German made immobiliser system which he uses, he said’

‘I am a dairy farmer and I treat my animals well. In fact this machine will prevent animals being beaten when they are being trained to be milked’

Mr Hayes said many farmers had responded to the advert, which he placed in the Farmers Journal seeking agents to sell these devices.

Water is in the process of being privatised by stealth. Citizens must inform themselves regarding the ongoing process to hand our water over to a private multi-national company to make profit and learn from the experiences in other jurisdicitons where privatisation has brought hardship to communities and particulatly to the most vulnerable members. Voters should seek to have this placed on the issues list for the upcoming general election. read full story / add a comment
