national / environment / press release Monday March 21, 2016 23:45 by foie
The European Ombudsman’s Office is to review its decision to close the file against the Commission’s handling of a complaint over alleged failure to notify consumers of the levels of water-borne toxins trihalomethanes [THMs] linked to cancers in Irish public water supplies.

During the Commission investigation the Irish authorities told the Commission that THMs exceed the WHO/EU permitted parameters in 412,000 of Irish Water’s 1.5m customer base, more than 1,000,000 consumers. THMS are a group of more than 60 chemicals, including chloroform which are disinfectant by products created when water with a high organic matter – such as peaty water or excessive algae – is treated with chlorine. read full story / add a comment
national / arts and media / press release Monday March 21, 2016 22:23 by Noel Kelly
Since 2008, during one of the worst financial crises to hit the state, government funding of the arts sector was significantly reduced as the overall Departmental budget has seen an increase. Department of the Arts, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht reports show that central funding increased from 245,000,000 Euro in 2008 to 310,000,000 Euro in 2016. During this same period Arts Council reports show a fall in their funding from 81,620,000 Euro to 59,100,000 Euro. This has resulted in a fall in supports to the individual artist who the sector rely on to maintain Ireland as a place that is known for its living culture and the arts. read full story / add a comment

national / politics / elections / opinion/analysis Saturday March 19, 2016 15:26 by Paddy Hackett
There is a good chance that FF will bring about a new general election in the not too distant future. This is because it is confident that there is a progressive electoral shift towards it. It is also in a buoyant mood because of its inchoate election recovery. It more than likely has the resources to fight another election. Both FF and FG expressly indicated that they would not form “a grand coalition”. The GE16 result means, in a sense, that the electorate don't want such a coalition. On the other hand SF, through Gerry Adams, indicated before the GE16 that it is prepared to form a coalition with SF. This means that the electorate may want a coalition with FF, SF and others.

Ireland is celebrating the 100 year anniversary of its Revolution that partially freed it from British rule. But the nation is still one of many around the globe that has yet to complete its “Unfinished Revolution,” because that phase of the struggle ended with its northeastern region partitioned in the 1920s into a new entity, “Northern Ireland,” so that places like Strabane still remain under British domination and occupation to this day.

The ongoing disaster that is Salmon farming both here in Ireland and around the world continues to demonstrate this industry is doing huge damage to the wild salmon and is overall destructive of the ecosystem. Not only that farmed salmon are regularly dosed in deadly toxic chemicals in a desperate effort to keep the sea lice parasites and disease under control and in every case they don't keep any control and the diseases just get more resistant. Salmon are simply not evolved to live in cages in extremely close proximity to tens of thousands of other salmon.

In this report, a letter from Ireland Against Salmon Farms outlines the most recent major salmon farm escape from a salmon farm off Clare Island, Co. Mayo. read full story / add a comment

Trump started back when Obama came to power. Questioning his birthplace. I have no time for Obama but this was racism. Then he refuses to condemn the KKK. His father was arrested as part of a KKK mob in New York City in 1927. Google Trumps farther and the KKK. Then he calls immigrants from Mexico and Central America, criminals and rapists. Then he calls for all Muslims to be kept out of the US. then he attacks women in the most vicious and degrading way. He is trying to build a white racist movement of mainly low paid workers and workers who have not benefited from the economic policies, globalization etc, of the past decades. Policies of the system that the racist Trump is a leader. in Chicago the youth came out and shut his racist divide and rule mouth. As Chicago resident i am proud. I thank the youth who took the lead.
