(Once again the GM interests have a go at Meacher. Not satisfied with having him removed as Environment Minister, they now want to silence him.) The head of Britain's leading scientific academy has accused the former environment minister Michael Meacher of "severely distorting" the scientific facts and uncertainties surrounding genetically modified foods. The furore over GM foods erupted once again on Sunday when Meacher published a newspaper article saying the government had ignored evidence that GM crops could be a hazard to human health. He had been environment minister for six years until losing his job on 13 June. http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99993874 read full story / add a comment

If you do, make sure they go to the Dail on Friday. Tell them you're being lied to, ripped off and cheated - and you want them to get to the bottom of it. They should ask for the article 133 committee minutes and negotiating stances for the WTO round. We have a European scrutiny bill that, during our recent reconsideration of the Nice treaty, we were promised would make everything apparent - tell your TD friend to use it. read full story / add a comment

..Andrea Needham, one of a number of women who undertook a Ploughshares action to disarm a warplane in the UK bound for use by the Indonesian military in East Timor and who was acquitted in court, spoke in support of more direct actions in Ireland...When the march set off for the airport, however, it soon became clear that the Gardai intended to allow two lanes of traffic, coming from and going to the airport, to pass by protestors. This meant that vehicles were coming right up behind protestors within a few inches of us, some at great speed – a considerable danger....Once our path was blocked, we were told that Inspector Tom Kennedy, the commanding officer on the day, had lied to the spokespersons....Later, Gardai swooped on several of those in the blockade and began dragging them towards a police van...the children of the arrested parents were left unattended... read full story / add a comment
