TCD Law professor and Former EU Parliament candidate for Dublin Ivana Bacik will be visiting UCD on Tuesday the 23rd of November. prof Bacik will be talking to us about the Criminal Justice Bill. If approved the Bill will allow for Gardai to issue on the spot fines to people if they deem fit, without stating a reason and without the right to appeal. It also allows for the Gardai to hold people for up to 24 hours and to retain a suspects DNA sample for 12 months. This bill if passed will undoubtabley be flawed in its application and biased towards young people. Id recommend that anyone interested in civil liberties should come along. Ivana will provide expertise in this area Talk will take place in room B101 in the Arts block at 1pm. All are very welcome to attend read full story / add a comment

New Cork yahoo group To keep people who join the group informed about alternative and left-wing and events and meetings and demos in Cork, everything from The SWP to the Tibetan Buddhists to community arts. Its getting hard to flypost and hopefully this group will make it easier to publicise events. Anyone can send messages to the whole group, but anyone posting stuff -which isn't publicising an event, -or is e.g: racist, homophobic or just right-wing will have that message removed and may be barred from the group. Another Cork, isn't, at the moment anyway a discussion forum, to avoid getting bogged down in dogma wars. . read full story / add a comment
