The following article has just been published in the latest edition of Comhlamh’s magazine, Focus (Winter 2003/Spring 2004). Written by Fintan Lane while in prison back in January, it argues that anti-war activists need “to develop a strategy based on tactical diversity”. This should have gone up Friday night but got delayed due to email problems. Maggie Global Women's Strike '....We in the US have paid for the brutal and illegal wars that this unelected president has urged us to fight for him, with homelessness, starvation, high infant mortality, no health care for millions, working three and four jobs just to survive. Our children are neglected, illiterate, undernourished and poisoned by junk food, polluted air and water, and pharmaceutical drugs. For weeks before the Bush visit the government and the mdia were going on about the need for extensive security for the Bush visit. The threat to the US President was real and had to be dealt with accordingly. Those in the anti-war movement argued that the security operation had more to do with preventing peaceful protest than anything else. CAD one is gone. He's in Turkey. They got bombed to say greet him. He's gone and laid a wreath to Ataturk. Their workers are going to get the chop. You in Ireland have accomplished one of the Geopolitically most succesful protests in the most creative and wideband way with wonderful results. The presidential re-election visit to Ireland of the world’s most hated man was a spectacular failure for Bush. As importantly, the extravaganza backfired on the Irish government. Bertie Ahern played the part of a lapdog to great affect, and nobody in Ireland liked it. Unusually, the media in Ireland refrained from assisting the government from putting a positive gloss on an unpopular action (given the depth of opposition to Bush, it couldn’t do anything else), and the Bush administration was made acutely aware of the deep-felt opposition to the US president and his “War on Terror”. The Carol Coleman interview with Bush allowed us all to witness the Texan cowboy squirm when confronted with his unpopularity amongst the Irish. read full story / add a comment

Between 1500 and 2000 anti-Bush protestors marched from City Hall to Spanish Arch where they heard from the new mayor, other City Council members & peace activists saying that Mr. Bush was not welcome in Ireland. Anti-war songs & poems entertined the crowd. A US "corporate flag" (see related link) appeared. [Some estimates of the crowd were larger.] read full story / add a comment

The protest march against the visit of George W. Bush began shortly before 6.30pm. Everyone was reported to be in high spirits. At 7.20 the march arrived near the Lidl supermarket. At 8.10 the front of the march was about three hundred metres walk from the airport. 8.30pm The march was stopped about 200 metres from Shannon Airport by the Gardai at about 8.15pm. There are estimated to be between eight and nine hundred protestors facing a solid wall of Gardai. The protest passed off peacefully, as expected read full story / add a comment

The results of the Local Elections show that the Bin Tax is still a very real issue. In areas where Anti Bin Tax candidates ran serious campaigns the resulting first preference vote was excellent considering the lack of finance and the voluntary nature of those campaigns. read full story / add a comment |
