On Saturday March 29, about 800-1000 people demonstrated against the installation of a US missile base in northern Poland. The base, which the governments of the US and Poland would like to build in Redzikowo, just outside of Slupsk near the Baltic Sea, would house elements of the American Missile Defense program, namely so-called interceptor missiles (which can also be used for offensive purposes. Despite the fact that 60% of local residents and over half of all Poles are strongly against the base, and only a small fraction of the rest support it, the government is intent to go ahead and build the base. A radar base is also to be built in the Czech Republic, again despite the opposition of most citizens. read full story / add a comment

The health crisis - Now is the time for a National Campaign The Government is: * Cutting frontline services while protecting its sweetheart deal with Big Pharma. * Creating a 4-tier health service where access depends on the size of your wallet and where you live. * Closing second level hospitals, leaving hundreds of thousands without ready access to inpatient facilities and putting them at risk of death and disability. * Privatising health care - scooping millions for corporations at the expense of our public health service. The conference will outline the roots of the current crisis and - crucially - create a space for discussion with activists, trade unionists, medical staff, community leaders, patient groups and members of the public, and take the first step in launching a national campaign for a sustainable health service. read full story / add a comment

In the summer of 1936, an army-led coup against the democratically elected Spanish republic ignited a three-year conflict which can today be seen as the first round of the Second World War. The Nationalist forces were backed by Hitler, Mussolini and international capital, a combination which resulted in the defeat of the republic and 40 years’ of repression and terror, with which the Spanish people are only now coming to terms. read full story / add a comment

On March 27, the U.S. appeals court in Philadelphia reaffirmed the frame-up conviction of Mumia Abu-Jamal, the former Black Panther Party spokesman and world-renowned radical journalist who has been locked up on Pennsylvania’s death row for more than a quarter century. Mumia is innocent. He was declared guilty and sentenced to die because of his revolutionary politics and because for years he had been a thorn in the side of the racist rulers of the misnamed “city of brotherly love.” Around the world, millions have come out in defense of Jamal. This latest ruling, like all those that preceded it, shows that the exploited and oppressed must have no faith in the racist injustice system. We call on the workers movement to mobilize its power to free Mumia now! read full story / add a comment

Dutch socialist MP Harry Van Bommel led the successful No vote campaign in Holland in 2005. His argument was primarily on the undemocratic nature of the EU. Of his own country he said he found it “remarkable that 62 per cent of voters reject something that is supported by 85 per cent of parliament.”. That was then. Now, Harry’s back. He wants to continue the “debate on what Europe should be and should do”. Mr Van Bommel is taking part in a speaking tour of Ireland, and will be speaking in Tralee on Sunday April 6th at 8PM at the Grand Hotel. read full story / add a comment

This morning's London Independent headlines with the news that a Christian Evangelical Group had paid interns working in the offices of Ministers in the run-up to the Human Fertilisation and Embrology Bill*. This contentious Bill had sought to lump together the issues of Chimeric (human-animal) creation together with a new amendment to reduce the 24 week abortion limit . The Group: C.A.R.E. Christian Action, Research and Education had access all areas in the Commons and of course into research materials pertinent to the legislation. This prompts one question- Tony Blair had brought some of the biggest US Companies to the UK to work in the areas of genetic research (despite his personal Evangelicalism and recent conversion). So what are the Evangelicals so pissed off about? (Abortion rights)/HFE. read full story / add a comment
