cork / animal rights / event notice Sunday September 04, 2011 23:00 by ARAN   image 5 images
We've seen the horrific images, we've heard their screams, and we know the suffering animals are enduring. Animal rescue groups, individuals and campaign groups are swept off their feet trying to deal with the huge surge in abandoned animals and cruelty cases, and we're desperately trying to fight back any further abuses from happening, whilst working to change hearts and minds. We don't need to remind you as to how bad the situation for animals is in Ireland. There is something you can do about it. It's shameful to say that our only scrap of legislation we currently have dates back to 1911, that's right, 1911. read full story / add a comment

On 12th August, 2010 representatives of republican prisoners, respected intermediaries and prison management negotiated a workable and
common-sense agreement regarding the regime in Maghaberry Prison. It was hoped this negotiated agreement would resolve the long-standing confrontation between republican prisoners and prison management. read full story / add a comment

Looking for balance? Andrew Flood gets out his scales and tries to find some balance in Libya. Did the Left come down too heavily on one side?

The sudden end of the Gaddafi regime some 6 months after the start of the Libyan revolt leaves some difficult questions unanswered for the left. Gaddafi’s determination to physically crush the revolt quickly transformed it into a civil war, a civil war that saw considerable imperialist intervention on the rebel side, intervention that was essential to their eventual victory. This and Gaddafi’s historic record led to some on the left taking his side in the civil war while other organisations tried to balance support for the ‘Arab spring’s’ arrival in Libya with opposition to imperialism. This question of where the balance lies between international solidarity with pro-democracy movements and opposition to imperialism could well rapidly return to the top of the agenda in a very much bigger way as the regime in Syria continues its months long military suppression of the democracy movement there. read full story / add a comment
