Rachel Peavoy was a 30 year old mother of two young boys. On Jan 11 2010 Rachel froze to death in her home which she had pleaded with her landlords Dublin City Council to be moved for 3 years without success. Her living conditions were of inhumane standards. She was isolated in a derelict block of flats with major anti social and drug dealing problems and also major maintenance problems. We want answers to why she was left to die in such conditions by Ireland's biggest landlord Dublin City Council. Many more still live in such conditions and this should never be allowed happen again. The human rights of these people need to be respected. read full story / add a comment

Wednesday and Thursday saw a serious of occupations and actions against the drilling compound at Aghoos in Mayo as part of the ongoing campaign against Shell. The events culminated in an eight-hour lock-on and a nine hour occupation of machinery which stopped all work for the day. Iranian Trade union leader Mansour Osanloo has been freed from prison after four years. Osanloo, chair of the Syndicat of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company (Sherkat-e Vahed), has been leading workers in their fight for better conditions and for independent unions in Iran. Arrested in July 2007, he was charged with organising “propaganda against the regime” and later accused of being a threat to national security. Throughout his imprisonment he has been subject to horrific abuse. In February 2010 there was an attempt on Osanloo’s life in Rajai-Shahr prison. He was attacked by a former member of the Revolutionary Guards state militia with the support of prison wardens. Two other prisoners intervened and saved him. Later in June 2010 further tragedy hit his family when security forces attacked Zoya Samadi, Osanloo’s daughter-in-law, causing her to miscarry. read full story / add a comment

This report from the WSM highlights the deepending crisis in the Irish prison system. Over the years the number of people per capita going to prison has been steadily rising and there are huge dangers with disease and infection from the practice of slopping out. And now an outbreak of TB is reported in three of the prisons. As elsewhere an dangerous drug resistant and largely incurable form of TB is on the rise. This might not seem of relevance to most people but it is not well known that in 2010 there were 520 people were imprisoned for non payment of fines like TV licences, parking fines etc. read full story / add a comment

A new craze where Panda Garra fish suck dead skin from feet is currently being offered in Dublin. The Alliance for Animal Rights is concerned about the fish and will be calling on the NSAI to investigate this.In 14 states in the US it is already banned as being unsanitary.
