In what could have seemed like a typical storm in a tea-cup about a fortnight ago & in my opinion didn't merit comment or reporting then, a village consultation in Catalonia has evinced EU parliament cross party condemnation of the Spanish state. The leaders of the EU conservatives, socialists, greens and liberals have expressed their concern at the continued operation of the Spanish Falange party. Manfred Weber leads the conservative block in the EU parliament he has said "this demonstration celebrates a brutal and inhuman totalitarian system in which thousands of European died and it must be stopped" or Bernhard Rapkay leader of the German socialists in the EU "we must punish any European who uses fascist symbols".

What could have caused that?

The story really is extraordinarily interesting, ironic, though provoking & of interest to Welsh, Scot or any referendum voter. read full story / add a comment

One of the original protagonists of the Cuban revolution, Juan Almeida Bosque, has died of heart failure at the age of 82, according to state media.

Almeida was one of several vice-presidents in the Council of State under Raul Castro.

He was the only black commander in the Cuban leadership.

From a poor Havana neighbourhood, Almeida was in the group of guerrillas led by Fidel Castro which eventually seized power in Cuba in 1959. read full story / add a comment

NAMA is nothing short of straight class robbery – robbery from ordinary workers in order to shore up the property developers and big bankers who got us into this mess in the first place. It can be described as unfair, it can be described as immoral but in reality it’s naked capitalism at work. read full story / add a comment

Kicking off a visual demonstration outside Harold’s cross stadium and working our way with the help of local activists in Northern Ireland down through Cork city, campaigners and supporters of Animal Rights Action Network held peaceful protests and tabling events to highlight the cruel greyhound racing industry in Ireland. During a week of action from August 24 to 30 we worked hard to get the facts out to the general public about the cruelty and exploitation of greyhounds in the racing industry. Over the week and during the month of September ARAN will be working hard to raise awareness of the Irish campaign to abolish cruel greyhound racing and to educate people about the horrors of what gentle greyhounds endure before, during and after their racing lives. read full story / add a comment

An allegation that the offices of the Sporting Press in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, which describes itself as the “official organ of the Irish Coursing Club (ICC), has been raided within the past few days by the Garda Fraud Squad has been leaked by Coursing supporters. This allegation is contained on an Internet chat forum called the “Greyhound Knowledge Forum”.

In the course of an exchange of views and comments by forum members, mainly in relation to Minister John Gormley’s upcoming decision on whether to grant a hare-netting license to the ICC, a person calling himself “Vinny Grennan” refers specifically to the presence of the Fraud Squad in the Sporting Press offices in Clonmel.

Yesterday in Belmullet District court, Maura Harrington was jailed for the fourth time this year over her opposition to Shell's plans in Mayo. Judge Mary Devins sentenced Ms Harrington to 3 months in jail for assaulting an employee of IRMS, and 3 months for trespassing in a farmyard close to the landfall site in Glengad on June 19 2008. Ms Harrington was also fined a total of €1000. This incident occurred shortly after Shell began drafting in security into the area and they had begun filming people in the locality (it hadn't been discovered these were working for IRMS at that stage).

Yesterday, marked one year to the day that Maura Harrington began her hungerstrike which lasted 11 days until the Solitaire left Irish waters. read full story / add a comment

The Irish Times reports the death of former owner, Major McDowell, September 10, 2009:

Major Thomas Bleakley McDowell
Former Irish Times chairman dies, aged 86

Widely known as “The Major”, he kept clear of involvement in editorial content, insisting that that was the domain of the editor.
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2009/0910/1....html

The Irish Times changed during the Major era, from a newspaper reflecting the protected but significant interests of a distinct Protestant business class to one that reflected the moderninsing interests of Irish capitalism. It was not as smooth a transition as the Irish Times usually reports.

In 1969 Major McDowell was 'hot under the coller" about the Irish Times. So wrote Andrew Gilchrist, the British Ambassador in Dublin to Whitehall. He went on: read full story / add a comment
