Just in case you thought all the talk about the Great Gas Rip Off ® was lefty treehugger claptrap ®, it was confirmed today by no less a personage than the government's own energy watchdog, who turns out to be highly-paid civil servant called Dermot Nolan. He works for a shower called the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) , and he told the Oireachtas Energy Committee today that as far as the Irish consumer is concerned, the gas from the Corrib field may as well be coming from Outer Mongolia (he didn't use those exact words). read full story / add a comment

Kieran Allen has just written an extensive article on the current global financial crisis. Here are the opening sentences on it. Most people are amazed to witness a new Wall St crash, when the spectacle of the 1929 crash was supposed to have vanished forever. For the past thirty years mainstream economists claimed that the market worked perfectly provided there was no state interference or strong trade unions. ‘You cannot buck the market’ was repeated like a mantra against anyone who dared to ask for higher wages, better environmental controls or a more developed welfare state. ‘Market forces’ were seen as wise spirits who knew best about how to run an economy. No one knew who or what they were but they appeared to work anonymously behind the scenes to make everything right. In almost every country, people were told to leave matters to these ‘market forces’ and not to seek too much regulation. In reality, these ‘market forces’ were gigantic financial houses which could move money around the globe at will. Today this mythology has been shattered. read full story / add a comment

The Leinster House Government has announced its intention to guarantee all deposits and borrowings for the six Irish-owned financial institutions for the next two years. The list is as follows: Allied Irish Bank, Anglo Irish Bank, Bank of Ireland, Irish Life & Permanent, Irish Nationwide Building Society and the EBS. Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan has been giving interviews to the corporate media all day to explain why this is a good idea. He says all deposits and debt will be covered by the State. read full story / add a comment

Octogenarian Hedy Epstein knows what she's talking about when it comes to fascism. She alone of all her family survived the Nazi anti-Jewish onslsaught in the Germany of the Thirties because her parents managed to send her out of the country on the Kindertransport. Her family subsequently perished in the concentration camps. Because of her experiences Hedy became a strong campaigner for human rights. She has supported many causes including that of Palestinian liberation. She has consistently criticised the policies of the State of Israel, drawing comparisons between these and those of the Nazis. Because of this she has been the object of vitriolic attacks by the Zionist lobby. She pulls no punches as the title of her latest tour of Britain and Ireland shows. read full story / add a comment

A number of groups from Erris and Co. Mayo went to meet with two government ministers, Éamon Ryan (Natural Resources) and Éamon Ó Cuív (Gaeltacht & Community Affairs) in Ballina today. These groups included Shell to Sea, Pobal Chill Chomáin, and Pobal le Chéile; a number of Erris fishermen accompanied by the parish priest of Kilcommon also met the ministers despite not having been invited. The ministers also met with the Pro- Gas Mayo Group and the Council for the West, organisations that could be candidly described as ‘astroturf’ (i.e. fake grassroots) and stalking horses for Shell. Following these encounters, the ministers met with the TDs for Mayo and county councillors from Erris, to round off what was a cynical PR exercise by an alarmed clueless government. read full story / add a comment

Besides highlighting EU hypocrisy in turning the blind eye to Israel's egregious violations of the Agreement, the Euro-Med Agreement, which economically privileges rogue state Israel with access to the EU market ( "Relations between the Parties, as well as all the provisions of the Agreement itself, shall be based on respect for human rights and democratic principles, which guides their internal and international policy and constitutes an essential element of this Agreement.") the other concern of the Free Palestine Campaign at last Saturday's info stall in Shop Street was Zionism's collusion with Nazism and the betrayal of the Jewish people leading up to and during the Holocaust . read full story / add a comment
