On Monday the 4th of January, members of Ógra Shinn Féin from the McDonagh/Farrell cumann, UCD, visited the European Parliament building in Brussels. From an early morning flight over, the Ógra activists made their way to the parliament buildings to meet with the Sinn Féin team working there. This is a small piece of the story of Ireland, taken on its own it is a local issue but it is being echoed right now all across the country and it raises many other issues in its wake; housing, development, local democracy, accountability, sustainability. All important and interesting but to cover all of them would make a long article so this concentrates on just one – Water, because that’s something I’m passionate about and something that is too much taken for granted in this water rich country. Recently, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution calling for the withdrawal of Israel from the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights. As expected, the resolution passed by a large majority of 157. Seven countries voted against: Israel, the U.S., Australia, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru and Palau.
