Unions, which organized the rallies, claimed more than 100,000 people attended, with 60,000 marching in Dublin. Demonstrators also protested in Cork, Galway, Limerick, Sligo and Waterford.

"It would be fatal for people to believe this issue is now resolved and we can all move on," David Begg a supposed Union leader said. "At the onset of the crisis Ireland had one of the lowest debt to GDP ratios in Europe. The difference between then and now is due entirely to Ireland socializing bank debt at the behest of the ECB, to save the European banking system."

The government inter-departmental committee setup to establish the facts into State involvement of the Magdalen Laundries was published on Tues 5th Feb in an attempt to deal with the issue for once and for all. What the findings show is that there was significant involvement and the laundries seem to have been used by a variety of state institutions for dealing for young women in terms of the justice system and social services that the state was unable or unwilling to deal with and the interface with reformatories and industrial schools.

In the aftermath the government has only offered a partial apology to the victims and they feel this is not good enough read full story / add a comment

Confusion reigns in Iran. The Iranian people have suffered from Imperialist sanctions but corruption and incompetence is rife amongst the ruling elite. The governor of Iran’s Central Bank, Mahmoud Bahman has been sacked for making improper withdrawals from client accounts. Yassamine Mather analyses the situation. Full text at link.

In Iran, presidential elections are looming, the economy is in freefall, the public hanging of small-time criminals is creating an atmosphere of terror, repression is worsening and workers are protesting throughout the country. There are unconfirmed reports of an explosion at the Fordo uranium enrichment plant and the infighting between factions of the regime is shown live on state-owned TV. Meanwhile, Israel has bombed a military facility in Syria, claiming it is used by Iranian Islamic guards, and civil war is breaking out in Iraq, Iran’s main Shia ally. Finally, the country’s aerospace agency has sent a monkey into space! All in all, as far as Iranians are concerned, it has been an eventful start to 2013. read full story / add a comment

Re- THE BAN BY DUNNES STORES ON ANIMAL CHARITY COLLECTORS.
……POSSIBLY A REASON FOR THE 'CHARITY COLLECTORS 'STOPPAGE BY DUNNES STORES
ARE BLOODSPORTS PEOPLE REALLY THIS NASTY???

We refer to the ban by the Dunnes Store’s chain on allowing Animal charities to collect at their many shops.
This has shocked many welfare groups as no explanation has be given despite radio and newspaper coverage.

We were informed yesterday by a posting on the PRO RACING and COURSING forum GREYHOUND NUTS that the once vocal Pro stag- hunting group Rise [rural Ireland says Enough]were behind the ban by Dunnes Stores. We enclose the page from the blog below which is run by Tom Brett of Cork.

Unfortunately as Dunnes Stores will not answer questions put to them we cannot verify this revelation. We invite you to investigate further in an effort to explain the strange ‘less than compassionate ‘ stance that they have adopted.

AFAR feels to alienate any worthwhile cause without explanation is unjust. read full story / add a comment
