In Dublin’s Temple Bar, within gunshot of the General Post Office, a diverse band of Irish citizen actors are planning to strike a blow against war and imperialism and for Irish freedom. This is not a costumed re-enactment of the 1916 Easter Rising but an act of contemporary revolutionary theatre, where the audience for the epic 1970s play the Non Stop Connolly Show, by Margaretta D’Arcy and John Arden, become the cast. Each lunchtime between 27 April and 12 May, volunteers muster at Connolly Books to take reading parts in the play which covers the life, struggles and death of James Connolly. Not only has the fourth wall been broken down, but the spirit of text has spurred solidarity action by the players in support of Maura Harrington, jailed in Mountjoy on Friday for her opposition to Shell’s rape of the the West of Ireland countryside. read full story / add a comment

Shell to Sea campaigner Maura Harrington was arrested in Belmullet on Friday afternoon and jailed for 10 days in Mountjoy prison for the non-payment of a court fine of E300. It is thought that the jailing relates to a 2012 protest attempting to block construction of the disputed development. read full story / add a comment

It is time for the negotiations to stop, and the debate to begin. Should we be able to act when we have reasonable grounds to believe our health and wellbeing is at risk, or must we wait until the damage is done? Were our governments serious in Paris when they said they would do what was necessary to protect the planet, and keep climate change under 1.5 degrees? CHASE has launched a plume plotter for the proposed 240,000 tonne incinerator at Ringaskiddy Co Cork. Developed by plumeplotter.com it provides a real time map image modelling ground-level pollution from the incinerator plume, modelled using AERMOD taking incinerator specifications provided by Indaver in their EIS, current weather data from local weather stations, Ordnance Survey (OS) data for places and NASA data for terrain. Residents in the Cork Harbour area and far beyond can use the plume plotter to see pollutant dispersal at any given time on www.plumeplotter.com/ringaskiddy. read full story / add a comment

"New research also indicates that the frequency and severity of violence forcing women to leave their homes could be worse than previously documented" SAFE Ireland warned that homeless figures and needs are being greatly under-estimated because over 4,000 women and children being accommodated on a yearly basis in emergency refuge accommodation are not being counted and recognised as being homeless. At the launch today of a new SAFE Ireland report The State We Are In, CEO Sharon O’Halloran stressed that women and children forced to leave violent homes are being caught in the cross-fire of the national housing crisis. She said that 37 services that participated in new housing research as part of The State We Are In are reporting that they have never seen things so bad for women and children. read full story / add a comment

The Bord Pleanala Oral Hearing for Indavers 240,000 tonne incinerator application at Ringaskiddy is due to commence in Carrigaline Court on Tuesday next, 19 April at 10.30pm.
