Carnival in Germany
international / arts and media / opinion/analysis Monday December 04, 2017 18:03 by Caoimhghin Ó Croidheáin   image 1 image
In 1762 Jean Jacques Rousseau published his book, The Social Contract, in which he wrote,

“In Greece, all that the populace had to do, it did for itself; it was constantly assembled in the public square.”

Rousseau was well aware of the importance of public spaces when it came to political change. Indeed, the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789 showed the power of the populace against armed guards defending the medieval fortress, armory, and political prison in Paris which at the time represented royal authority. Interestingly enough, the decision had also been taken to replace the Bastille with an open public space and the fortress was demolished within five months. Since then many open public spaces around the world have been the centres of political activity. read full story / add a comment

The courtcase which gave the Forest of Hambach a little more time to prepeare for cutting season is lost. RWE started today with clearing bushes to prepear for total cutting.
The preparations for an massiv police action are obviously. They announced that they want to evict the whole occupation. We expect them latest on Monday for evictions. They are already in the forest protecting machinery. So we need to mobilise our forces as well. read full story / add a comment

We are reposting this story due to its importance and the way it highlights the workings of the empire work

On July 14 this year a British man from the Manchester area named Benjamin Stimson, aged 41, a man the London Times called a “socialist” to add to his crimes, was convicted under the British Terrorism Act for “facilitating” acts of “terrorism” by serving with one of the Donbass Republic militias for four months in 2015, as an ambulance driver. read full story / add a comment

Almost ten per cent of whales, dolphins, and porpoises examined as part of a new Irish study were found to have plastics in their digestive tracts.

The study ( https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0269...5204#! ) published in Environmental Pollution found that 8.5 per cent (45 individuals) of Irish cetaceans tested had marine debris in their stomachs and intestines.

Deep-diving offshore species such as True’s and Cuvier’s beaked whales ingested more plastics than individuals from coastal or pelagic species.

Data compiled from 1990-2015 on cetacean stranding and bycatch in Ireland was analysed in the study, with post-mortem examinations carried out on 528 digestive tracts from 11 species. read full story / add a comment

On November 2nd 2017, please join us between 1pm and 2.30pm for a symbolic lunchtime protest at the British Embassy in Dublin to commemorate the centenary of the issuance of the ‘Balfour Declaration’ by the British Empire, which promised historic Palestine to the Zionist movement against the wishes of the Palestinian people – thus laying the foundation for waves of ethnic cleansing and the ongoing colonisation of Palestine by Israel.

The protest will highlight the role of British imperialism in the partition of Palestine, and its collaboration with the crimes and abuses of the Israeli state against the Palestinian people ever since – and call for end to this collusion and for freedom, justice and equality for Palestinians. read full story / add a comment
