The parents of girls who attend St John's Girls' national school, in Carrigaline, County Cork, have been instructed by the school's principal, Catherine O'Neill to provide toilet paper for their daughters. It's one those stories which appeals to an international audience and especially the lurking anti-Irish sentiment still present in AngloSaxon media or perhaps if not anti-Irish, a sour sense of resentment that other English speaking peoples never got to enjoy 2 Lisbon Referenda or a jaunt on the pig's back of the Celtic Tiger. Whatever the true classification of the story doing international commerical & state rounds today, msot readers will admit it illustrates a wee home truth. read full story / add a comment

This is the first history of Ireland’s War on Turkey and explains why Britain really made war on the Ottoman Empire. It explains the reasons for the establishment of Palestine and Iraq and why the US was repelled from the League of Nations by the behaviour of the British Empire. It describes the rise of Ataturk and the successful Turkish War of Independence. read full story / add a comment

The Socialist Party's analysis of the Lisbon referendum result, titled: "Lisbon victory not endorsement for hated government" is now online. A significant 2/1 majority, on a higher turnout, passed the Lisbon Treaty overturning the decision of June 2008. It is clear that the economic crisis served to shift opinion across the board to a yes vote because people felt that passing the Treaty might boost Ireland’s prospects for economic recovery. Last year Lisbon was rejected because people feared the consequences of the changes it brings to the EU and because of a distrust of the political establishment. For a majority this time around the actual Treaty and its contents were secondary to the economic crisis. Read it all at link below. read full story / add a comment

At midday today, Monday 5th October, a demonstration to protest the Palestinian Authority’s action in scuttling the Goldstone Report of the UN Human Rights Council’s Fact Finding Mission to Gaza was held in Ramallah. It had been called over the weekend by a collective of Palestinian civil society including political parties, development organisations, human rights NGOs, and concerned individuals. The demonstration was to give a voice on the streets to the increasing frustration and despair with the unrepresentative and deeply unpopular policies and practices of the Palestinian Authority. The BBC have offered the BNP a platform on Question Time. The far-right BNP won 2 seats in the recent European elections. This party is attempting to develop a respectable image, but their core is out-right fascism. Their founder called Hitler’s ‘Mein Kampf’ his ‘Bible’ and Nick Griffin, the current leader, regularly denied the Holocaust. read full story / add a comment

A crowd of about 100 people gathered to march down towards the gate of Marine Terminals Ltd. In anticipation of the march by the strikers and their supporters, the company had closed the gates. The march happened on the same day that polls were open for the Lisbon treaty, and a number of speakers at the gate made the point that this was the type of Europe we were getting thanks to Lisbon. read full story / add a comment

I am writing this article to draw attention to the fact that vegetable growers can no longer be sure that farmyard manure, (including horse manure), is safe to use. There have been huge problems since last year where contaminated manure has led to stunted and grossly deformed vegetables in thousands of gardens, allotments and farms across the UK and the US, and now Irish gardeners are starting to be affected too. Potatoes, tomatoes, peas, beans, carrots and salad vegetables are all vulnerable, and there have been reports of damage to onions, leeks, raspberries and even a newly-planted tree; though, worryingly, some vegetables such as courgettes appear unaffected when grown on the same contaminated manure. read full story / add a comment

12,000-15,000 people marched through Dublin yesterday (September 30th) to protest at big cuts this year to community resources and the threat of massive further cuts. The marchers are people living and working on the ground and they see the harm done, with worse to come. "People live in communities, not economies," read one of the thousands of placards. If there was a general theme running through the march, it was that people saw the Government as helping out ‘fatcats’ and developer friends at the expense of poor communities. The next big COMMUNITY march - bringing in people from all over Munster – is due to be held in Limerick on November 5th (fifth). Taking advantage of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's appearance at the UN in New York, thousands of Iranians from all across North America and beyond held two days of spirited protests against this icon of hate for many millions of their countrymen. They included a wide range of people, including many veterans of the 1979 revolution driven into exile, and U.S. and Canadian-born youth of Iranian descent awakening – and sometimes reawakening their elders – to political life. They also represented a broad range of political opinion, with a strong showing of forces identifying with the pro-Islamic Republic "Green" reformist opposition of presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi, as well as revolutionaries, communists and many others against both the Islamic regime and U.S. imperialism. read full story / add a comment |
