The Shell manager who accepted the latest load of letters from objectors to the Shell project just last week turns out to be the son of a (former) Labour politician. A politician who always campaigned hard on Corrib, but on behalf of the multi-national, not his constituents. So it was a bit of a surprise to see Jerry Cowley, wealthy Barrister and GP, and once supposedly a supporter of the Shell to Sea campaign, sign up for Labour yesterday. read full story / add a comment

---Corrib project has been imposed through 'harassment' of the local community--- 409 letters have been delivered from members of the community of Kilcommon to Shell's Belmullet offices today Monday. The letter outlines their refusal to meet with representatives of the company while Pat O'Donnell remains in jail and the imposition of the Corrib gas project continues without community consent. The letters detail a large number of grievances that the local community have with the imposition of the project, and state that people are refusing to meet with Shell while what “effectively amounts to ongoing and escalating physical and psychological harassement” continues in the area. The letters dismiss as hollow Shell's proposed 'consultation', in the context of the fact that the current and previous Managing Directors of the company have publicly stated that the project will not be changed in any way in response to community concerns. read full story / add a comment

Are we spending our precious time outside of work at protests and meetings because we want to improve our lives or are we just fighting for future generations. In either case what is it that we are trying to do as we move from topic to topic and struggle to struggle? Alan MacSimoin doesn't expect to see the glorious day while Andrew Flood is preparing for it being just around the corner. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday evening pro-Palestine groups staged a protest against the presence of former Israeli Ambassador to the UN Dore Gold and Israeli Embassy delegates at the Clinton Institute in University College Dublin. Gold, who also served as an advisor to Ariel Sharon during the years 2001 – 2003 (years which saw vicious repression of Palestinians during the second intifada, including Operation ‘Defensive Shield’ which killed over 500 people in three weeks), was engaged in an Israeli *hasbara* operation, giving a lecture on the ‘two state solution’ to a small select invite-only audience. One presumes – given that we were not allowed inside - arguing for a Palestinian Bantustan statelet and the primacy of Israeli ‘security concerns’ over the right to Palestinian self-determination. read full story / add a comment

The left talks a lot about class but in a manner that often confuses more than it clarifies. In this audio recording of a Rethinking revolution seminar at Seomra Spraoi Paul Bowman wonders just how useful the classification obsessed approach of the left actually is. read full story / add a comment

The planned Festival of Fire on the Hill Of Uisneach, in West Meath on May eve cannot be welcomed or allowed pass with comment or protest. This festival, once among the most ancient of all our festivals has grown from a renewed small gathering of spiritually minded people to a business venture now and one with scant regard for the ecology, heritage and environment of this ancient site. read full story / add a comment

Yassamine Mather writes about the ongoing Imperialist agenda to impose even stronger sanctions against Iran. Now Obama has the support of the Chinese regime. Yassamine makes it clear that this has got nothing to do with nuclear weapons. Full text at link. For the last few months, every day - and at times more than once a day - media presentation of world news has been dominated by US attempts to impose sanctions on Iran. Sometimes it is the visit of a foreign head of state to Washington that is the occasion for the latest call; at other times it is Hillary Clinton’s world tour, or a phone call from Barack Obama to a Chinese leader. read full story / add a comment

Tony Greenstein writes on how the Zionists are continuing to cleanse the Occupied Territories, making parts of the West Banks permanent no go areas for Palestinians. But the Zionist State is also moving against Israeli Jews who oppose Zionism. Full text at link. In the past two weeks there has been an increase in Israeli attacks on Gaza, culminating with the bombing by Israel of a factory and civilian areas on April 1. Presumably some form of April fool’s joke - with a vengeance. However, the sporadic firing and shelling does not tell the whole story or even part of it. Israel continues to maintain its starvation blockade, which has in itself resulted in hundreds of silent deaths - ie, medical emergencies, the elderly and very young without nutrition, people living outdoors in the cold (concrete is barred from the list of imports). read full story / add a comment

Stephen Lendman writes about the ongoing Zionist campaign against Palestinian Youth. Every year, approx 700 West Bank children, are arrested, detained, interrogated, and prosecuted in Israeli military "courts". About 6,500 since 2000. Full text at link. In June 2009, Defence for Children International (DCI)/Palestine Section published a report titled, "Palestine Child Prisoners: The systematic and institutionalized ill-treatment and torture of Palestinian children by Israeli authorities."
