The report launched today is the result of an investigation into the reality of abortion in Ireland, which was carried out in 2009. The report examines the real effects of Ireland's restrictive and often unclear abortion laws on women in crisis pregnancy and highlights the increased burdens placed on women forced to leave the state to access medical care. Commenting, Spokesperson Sinead Ahern said “In the 27 years since the 8th amendment we have criminalised and stigmatised women in crisis. We have not stopped abortion happening; we have simply driven it abroad or underground. It is time that we discuss the issue of abortion in Ireland in terms of the reality and not geography. Although the women visit foreign clinics we still have a duty of care to them”. read full story / add a comment

Natural Resources Minister Eamon Ryan today presented the Petroleum (Exploration and Extraction) Safety Bill 2010 to the Oireachtas The Bill confers responsibility on the Commission for Energy Regulation for the regulatory function for the safety of oil and gas infrastructure in Ireland. Historian Jean-Luc Einaudi will be a key speaker at “Losing Their Memory, State killings in Derry, Belfast and Paris”, in Seomra 2 at the Culturlann, Great James’ Street, an event, including the premiere of “Octobre a Paris”, which runs from 10 am until 2pm. First ever daily Basque-language newspaper Egunkaria was closed down by the Spanish state in 2003, 18 journalists and administrators arrested and five tortured. Five journalists are now on trial by Spanish Court for alleged links to armed group ETA. However the Spanish State Prosecutor said that there is no evidence and the case should be dropped, whereupon the Spanish state permitted two right-wing organisations to proceed with the prosecution. Ainara Mendiola, Coordinator of the defence campaign in the Basque Country, will be speaking at public meetings in Dublin on Tuesday 2nd February. read full story / add a comment

Irish primary schools celebrated a victory this week as Independent Newspapers abandoned their “Building for the Future” scheme just weeks after its high-profile launch. It is the first time a major in-school marketing promotion has been scrapped and is an embarrassing climb down for Independent and their co-sponsors Bank of Ireland. The launch of “Building for the Future”, which demanded a quota of 20 tokens per pupil from schools wishing to enter, was met with condemnation from across the teaching community. read full story / add a comment

The long awaited Puppy farming Bill now being added to our Irish animal protection legislation is a much-needed and vital piece of legislation. We have all seen the results of the SPCA raids on dog breeding farms throughout Ireland. Dogs living in horrendous conditions in their own excrement with improper nourishment , housing and no veterinary care. So many having to be euthanized , their suffering so severe. What person in their right mind would object to allowing Gardai and animal protection groups more access and powers to punish the offenders who perpetrate crimes against defenceless pups and dogs. read full story / add a comment

Anyone judging from the huge numbers of troops mobilised to Haiti could reasonably believe that this is a country in the middle of a brutal civil war instead of a nation hit by a deadly earthquake. While the Media has been feeding constantly news of murder, mayhem, and gangsters supposedly in control of Haitian streets, together with calls for a “strong arm” and “security” to make possible the delivery of relief, the reality seems to be quite another. Medical and Food assistance has been largely delayed by a cobweb of inefficiency, bureaucracy and negligence and not for “security” issues. In the meantime, hungry and thirsty Haitians have been largely looking for their beloved ones under the rubble with their bare hands. Very few doctors and relief agencies have dared to go to the streets of Port-au-Prince, where precious assistance –currently stockpiling in the airport- is much needed. read full story / add a comment

Saturday 30th January will see the Irish premiere – indeed the first screening in the English-speaking world – of the 1962 film Octobre a Paris [October in Paris] by Jacques Panijel. The film got its first and only screening in Paris in May 1962, immediately after which the film club where it was being shown was raided by Police and the film seized. Other 16 mm copies being screened around France were seized in the following days. Later in that summer Panijel did manage to get Octobre a Paris shown at the Venice Film Festival, but soon after the film would disappear, not to re-surface for over forty years. The film is a first-hand account, using eye-witness testimonies and original footage, of the 17 October 1961 massacre in Paris and the events leading up to it. read full story / add a comment
