The summer is always full of sport - the good weather sends us outdoors and between the cycling and the walking and the boating and the wrestling it can all get a bit competitive. But now that Mayday and Bush are behind us, and the summer is ending we move from sport to debate in the flow of the seasons. The Autumn is conference season and the movements generally have their shindigs around now. From Grassroots to SIPTU, from the Independent Media Support Group (c. 25 members) to the British TUC (c. 7 million members) it can be called a gathering or a meeting or a conference or whatever. From the committee rooms, the meetings and.. err.. the meeting rooms of the ongoing social forum process the full shocking story. read full story / add a comment

In 1974, Spain, Portugal and Greece were run by dictatorships and together with the Soviet domination of Eastern Europe, democracy in Europe was an endangered specie. By joining the EU, countries have strenghthened their democratic structures and the same opportunity is available to Turkey. In recent times, the human rights situation has improved and the repression of the culture of the minority Kurdish population has been eased. read full story / add a comment

People of Dún Laoghaire Boycott Boyd-Barrett Protest Following the massive failure of Richard Boyd Barrett’s “Save Our Sea Front” protest to attract the support of the people of Dún Laoghaire on Sunday, it is now clear that the group holds little or no mandate to speak on the topic. Barrett & the SWP have consistently claimed they have the support of the majority of locals in the area – yet just a little over 150 people out of a possible 50,000 residents in the Dún Laoghaire Ward turned up to support the protest. I hope all the local Councillors Bailey, Devlin, Mitchell-O'Connor, Regan, Ireland & Dillon-Byrne will now stand-up to this fascist - bullyboy and move ahead with a second competition to develop the Dún Laoghaire Baths Site in partnership with the community so as to create a sustainable development that benefits the Town and the wider business community. read full story / add a comment |
